Fixed light source vs flash?

I have enjoyed natural light and makeshift devices on occasion as I've been dabbling in macro work. I have seen some very interesting flash setups. But, realizing that fixed light sources, like LEDs with diffusers, etc might offer greater predictability regarding results. I really like the twin flash that Canon and others in order to bring light from multiple directions (rather than a ring light). To be clear, I'm thinking of a general purpose fixed light source, though I know people use all kinds of creative solutions for various purposes... fairy lights for mushrooms on a forest floor, for instance

I'm wondering what people are using as fixed light sources that work well for them? How do they compare to flash in terms of quality of lighting options and results? Other thoughts people might have on fixed light source vs flash?

Thanks!

Re: Fixed light source vs flash?

For macro I've used both diffused flash and LED units. I now have four 49-LED units which can be used as one array both on or off camera or separately to light the subject from multiple locations. Although I really like the idea of fixed light sources, they don't produce enough light for higher shutter speeds and I still mostly use flash to stop movement.

Woody, thanks. Helpful to hear from someone that has used both. Which LED do you use? Would you recommend them to someone that wants to try a fixed light source or have you encountered more appealing alternatives since obtaining your current setup?
