7Artisans 4mm Fisheye - Q&A

I have received the 7Artisans 4mm fisheye and I will be making a youtube review.

If you have any questions you would like to have answered, please go ahead and ask.

I will test it on the M6 mark II and compare it to my Opteka 6.5mm f/2 fisheye.

First impressions:

Lens is very nicely build and quite small.

This video answers most questions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCLVyLBPGPg

Did you order it from the 7artisans website in China or did you find a local distributor? I suppose import tax is a risk to consider

I would like to see some straight-up shots to see how much ground it captures to make 360° panoramas like this https://www.acapixus.dk/photography/LaowaVenus4mm_EFM/samples.htm
I gave up on in Laowa, as it was not really wide enough

And possibly we could collaborate on making a RectFish profile for the lens while I am figuring out whether to get my own.

Re: 7Artisans 4mm Fisheye - Q&A

Is this could be a good replacement for a UWA lens?

any software can make it looks perfectly straight?

7Artisans sent me the lens for review. But generally in the US, big stores like B&H have them in stock pretty shortly after launch.

What do you need to create a RectFish Profile?

You probably could, but I doubt that you should. I personally would not recommend it.

If you want UWA get, depending on budget the Canon 11-22 or 10-18 (with adapter).

Fisheye lenses are great fun, but for me I see them for the special effect.

Re: 7Artisans 4mm Fisheye - Q&A

Will the detail resolution hold up after being stretched flat in post compared to e.g. Laowa 9mm?

Fisheye lenses are great fun, but for me I see them for the special effect.

Sometimes you just want that extra wide that no rectilinear lens can produce, and then rectilinearizing a fisheye image can be the only option if you do not want to go into stiching.

A diagonal fisheye will of cause be better for the job as it uses the full width of the imager.

Below a couple of examples, remapped using RectFish, from a couple of recent trips

Rectilinearized @ 130° hAOV : Canon EOS M + Samyang 7.5mm fisheye

Massimo Theater / Palermo

Rectfished @ 180° hAOV: Canon EOS M + Samyang 7.5mm fisheye

YouTube review (includes vs. 6.5mm Meike)

I just published my review on youtube. Also included comparison vs. the 6.5mm Meike (also sold under Opteka name).

https://youtu.be/wgEBGWu1oFM

In summary:

Great little lens.

Very sharp.

Obviously a one trick pony but for the price I think it is worth it.

I think it is the cheapest circular fisheye that shows the whole circle on the Canon crop sensor.
