UWA : EF-S 10-18 or EF-S 10-22 on Canon M50?

Hi all

A recent trip to Italy with my widest lens being the 18-55mm kit lens has proven to me that I need a wider lens for my travel kit.

So I am looking at either the EF-S 10-18 or 10-22mm adapted onto an M50. I am tempted by the EF-M 11-22 and its size BUT it's quite a bit more expensive and i don't really want any more M lenses, in case Canon mothballs the system.

I have other DSLRs as well that I can fit the EF-S lenses on, so that is much more future proof\ adaptable.

I like the 10-22s larger range and increased speed at the wide end - but as I understand it is an old lens and suffers quality wise quite a bit.

Thoughts?

11-22 is way better

I gave away my 10-18

For DSLRs:

The 10-18mm is smaller, lighter, cheaper, has IS, is newer than the 10-22mm.

See Ken Rockwell's review. He's definitely in favour of the 10-18, and so is just about everyone I've heard from.

https://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/10-18mm.htm#comp

And from his review for the 10-22mm:

https://kenrockwell.com/canon/1022.htm

"It was hot stuff when announced in August 2004, but today, the new 10-18mmEF-S is optically superior, smaller, lighter, add Image Stabilization and sells for half the price.

The best thing about this lens is its metal lens mount, slightly faster optical speed and direct mechanical instant manual-focus override. Otherwise, the 10-18mm is better in every other way and half the price."

This is the EOS-M forum, hence EF-M, so I expect everyone here will be in favour of the EF-M 11-22mm, which is supposed to be better than the EF-S alternative (I haven't done any research).

I had the EF-s 10-22 and used it adapted on my M50ii. I sold it this summer and replaced it with the EF-m 11-22. IQ is approximately the same. The EF-s is a little bit brighter but not much, and you often shoot that lens @ f/8. The EF-m has IS, and that is important. Most important for me was size. I always travel with 2 cameras: the M50ii with EF-m 11-22 for the wide angles and my RP or 6D for the rest. M50ii with EF-m 11-22 is very very small and very light. The adapted EF-s is big on camera and also in the bag. I added the Sigma  EF-m 30mm f/1.4  so M50ii has a lot of use! These 2 lenses alone justify the M50ii. This setup is relatively cheap.

So my advice: M50ii with EF-m 11-22. You will love it the next 10 years. Forget EF-s : increased speed and wider angle was not the most important for me. Perhaps you will buy an R10/R7 in the future. Then you can keep EF-m 11-22 for the wide angle as a complement to your R10/R7. R10/R7 does not have good wide angle solution... (yet...)

we are similar

in my case, m6II + 32 + 11-22

and then RP or 6d for the rest

Thanks for the suggestions all.

I would really like the EF-M version as it is very small and light, but it is nearly double the price of the EF-S lenses and it will only work on my EF-M cameras.

I think I am going to go for the 10-18. The long end will be 28mm, which is where my kit lens starts - should be a nice addition to the travel arsenal!

Thanks all!

My EF-S 10-18 is really sharp. I don't know if I got a good copy or what, but it's fantastic.

I was in the same boat 3 years ago. I bought the EF-S 10-18 used for less than 1/3 rd the price of the EF-M 11-22 and I don't regret it one bit.

I have two examples of shots with the EF-S 10-18 mm in my gallery.

Great to hear that.  Mine was quite soft on the left edge, noticeable even at 4k monitor resolution at 10mm wide end.

The consumer-grade zooms from Canon (and likely other manufacturers can be hit or miss if you're a pixel peeper. Most are OK but once in a while you'll see one that was assembled perfectly and all the lens elements are in perfect alignment.... those lenses are very good across the entire frame, and are great deals and worth holding onto.
