Just purchased a G1X On eBay
1

I have had the G12 for several years and enjoyed it, but a year and a half ago, I converted it to Infrared as I had a Panasonic FZ2500 and thought that would take the place of the G12. Still, I found the FZ too big for many occasions and a complicated camera. It seemed I could change just about any setting on the camera except the camera's color itself, and it was too easy to hit one of the buttons and change a setting.

So I recently purchased the G1X on E bay, I have not received it yet, but I look forward to using it. Any thoughts on the G1X?

I had a G1X Original for 8 years (Bought new at launch) , put 50K shots on it and eventually the lens fell to bits but it was hammered to death .. superb camera best shot in RAW to get the most out of it . the lens is slower than the Mk2 but is optically better and you get the full 14Mp all the time .

the Image quality stands up today , its basically the same as a 650D DSLR in live view but with the sensor cropped to 14Mp from 18 and a far better lens than any of the cheap DSLR Kit lenses , also it`s a lot better at AF than a DSLR of that era in live view too . some will say its slow and clunky but as a walkabout camera (or for product photography which I used it for mainly ) it was more than fast enough ..

Weaknesses are 1:- a total lack of any kind of realistic closeup abiilty ..2:- OVF is ok at a pinch but its rarely bang on framing wise

Thanks for the input; when I was looking at the G1X I was hoping that the OVF was going to be better than the one on the G12, but it sounds like it's not. But sounds like the IQ is what I am hoping for. I'm looking forward to working with it. One of the big reasons I got the G12 was its RAW ability.

The OVF is pretty much as inaccurate as the G11, G10 , G9 etc for sure (never tried a G12) . the files are surprisingly malleable for a 10yr old camera , as always with canon, you get quite a bit of leeway in the highlights for recovery but the shadows are noisier but there is information there ( canon are still the same now going by the EOS-M6 Mark-2 ) - that APS_C 18Mp sensor always was good (even cropped by the camera hardware to 14Mp) ,. I don`t think you will be disappointed ..

I use the Canon EOS 7D, along with a couple of cheap powershots.

I had the 600d with the IS II kit lens, and I'm told the 7D's IQ is pretty much the same.

If everything adds up, that would mean the G1X has better IQ (obviously for the optical zoom range) than the 7D and STM kit lens I'm using now. Sounds pretty impressive.

Agree?

Well the sensor is the same only cropped to 14Mp , the lens is longer faster and sharper edge to edge end to end . or at least my copy was .

Re: Just purchased a G1X On eBay

This sounds good, and I look forward to working with the G1X.

I shot with a Canon 80D and a couple of 60Ds in my photography business. I have a studio and shoot more sports and school photography, but I have been a wedding photographer for 30 years. I went fully digital in the business on 05 with Canon 20Ds, the 30Ds, and now to the 60 and 80D. But I go on motorcycle camping trips and some backpacking, and I want a good quality camera that is not too large and heavy. The G12 has fit the bill for several years.

I purchased a Panasonic FZ2500 that I thought would take its place, but I have found that it is a little too big for those uses, that it is a battery hog, and with that 1-inch sensor, it doesn't have the IQ of the 80D. I plan on selling it and getting a 150-600 zoom for the DSLRs.

I went digital for weddings with a D60 in 2002 and then worked my way through the 1DS series starting with the original in 2003 - when they stopped making them, I moved to Nikon with the D800E .. I used Digital before 2002 for product photography with a coolpix 950 and an Oly E10 but the Canon D60 really was a game changer for me (the D30 didn`t have enough resolution to plunk down over 2 grand so waited for the 60)

I began with a little Olympus Camedia 2020;  a 2MP camera that I got my feet wet in digital with, then an E10 and an E20 before getting a Pentax PZ1P because I had Pentax 35mm lenses, but I was never happy with the sharpness of that camera and sold it on eBay and finally went with the Canon 20D. I used the hell out of the 20 and 30Ds and only had one issue with a camera body.

Re: Just purchased a G1X On eBay

I have a G1X for many years now. Its photo quality is very good. One problem showed up, the switch of flash on/off is not working. I open the flash and it does'nt become on. I'm thinking of buying a small external flash to overcome the problem.

Try the little 90EX which came bundled with the EOS-M , it`s tiny , very cheap from a dealer like MPB and pretty effective too , way more so than the built in one

I had one external flash - the Nissin di600 or something like that. It was way too heavy; I never took it with me. In the end I sold it to generate funds for my next camera.

Do you recommend the 90EX from a size/weight point of view?

Do you think (imagine) it would much more powerful than my 7D's built-in flash?

I received the G1 X today, and I am impressed. It's a hefty camera, and the few test shots I have done look great. The example I got is in perfect condition; it looks right out of the box. I'm going to take it around with me tomorrow and do some shooting.

Congrats !! - it`s not the fastest camera on earth, I`d say a bit faster than a G7X Mk1 at AF etc which isn`t bad for a 10yr old cam but fast enough for walkabout etc .
