R6 AF’d on a moonlit waterfall!
14

Bridal Veil Falls in Provo, Utah under moonlight

In years when the moon phase and the fall foliage align, I’ve often taken autumn color photos under moonlight. Because I’m weird like that, I guess. I first did this with my Rebel XTi in 2007 or so, and I recently made my first attempt with my R6.

Usually I do live view manual focus on a bright star and assume the waterfall is close enough to infinity not to matter (and it is, unless I’m trying a telephoto shot). But for grins this time I attempted to autofocus on the waterfall and I was floored to see that it worked perfectly! This is with the nifty fifty.
A gibbous moon puts probably less than a quarter of a lux on the landscape. I’m impressed. I was not able to AF on other geologic features so I’m guessing speculation reflections on the water were what made it work.

Great shot.  The R6 AF continues to impress me.  Autofocusing on stars is a useful feature to me.  Then yesterday I was shooting a soccer match and the AF just nailed it.  Such a versatile and great camera!

Re: R6 AF’d on a moonlit waterfall!

is this one single exposure or did you do the sky separately and added to the waterfall?

Impressive if this is one shot as it must have been quite dark for the camera to focus on the water.

Indeed the R5&6 AF is amazing.  Last week I used my R5 and 24-105/4 on a tripod inside a sea cave which was poorly lit, with a 10-stop ND filter attached.  The AF worked perfectly, and the exposure was correct - no calculations needed.

I tried to shoot Carlsbad Caverns about 6 years ago with my old 6D, even used a tripod... But the shots were really rough. Sure like a do over with my R5 🙂
