An Anniversary...

Today is the two year anniversary of Canon's announcement of the M50 Mark II, which was just a minor update of the 2018 version.

I don't expect it to happen, but it would be nice if Canon "shocked the world" by releasing a new M model.

The M50 Mark II was itself indeed a shock to me.

Would love to see an M6 Mark III "Firmware Update."

I'd love to see an M6 Mark III with first curtain electronic shutter

As long as we are wishing for some thing- how about a 33mp aps c camera with the ability  to use the hot shoe and EVF at the same time. Tragic oversight. An M5II would probably have been a home run instead of a double. Notice they didn't make the same mistake with the R 7.

If I’m gonna have a camera as big as the R7, I might as well just switch to full frame. I don’t understand the point of a cropped R body. The M series is just perfect. Its light and compact. The R series can’t even touch them I terms of size and weight.

Not a day goes by that I don’t wish the R7 had the same form factor as the M6ii.  No EVF to get in the way, and a tilt screen would be perfect!

Just different strokes.  I for one am so glad that Canon actually produced a camera such as the M6/ii.

You’re right. With basically the same grip, the R7 feels just like its bigger brethren. I don’t notice much difference at all (in handling) when shooting.

I don’t understand the point of a cropped R body.

It’s more ideal for focal-length limited situations, like birding and for me, macros. I use the largish RF 100mm Macro on it and add my bulky twin LED rig (or my bulky MT-26EX-RT twinflash) and those setups are LARGE. The big grip really helps with that. Plus I get the added 1.6x crop (vs FF) which is about perfect for me.

The main thing I wish the R7 had is a nice tilting LCD like the M6ii (the flip-out is just too cumbersome IMHO), and if I could get rid of the EVF I would (the back protrudes way too much and blocks the LCD when I’m looking down at it).

The M series is just perfect. Its light and compact.

Agree with you there. For small, light, and inexpensive, it can’t be beat. Plus it’s still extremely capable!

The R series can’t even touch them I terms of size and weight.

Just different purposes! I’m glad to have so many options.

Happy shooting!

Yeah I guess my point is... there's still a place for the M line to exist in Canon's lineup. It's really nothing like their other models, so I don't think they have to worry about the R7/R10 cannibalizing the M cameras. Plus, people love the M series for blogging!

I really like mine !

I already had a M50 but I bought it to see how improved the focus features really were.

My M50II does track better than my M6II and has better eye focus.

That is some 8 MB of firmware improvement !

M50II will mount my 11-22mm. 32mm and 56mm lenses too. What a big plus !

Took it to the Plant City car show yesterday ! No regrets !

If you were upgrading from an earlier M50 or M6 today, would you get the M50 II or the M6 II ? I currently have an M6 (and EVF-DC1) and I'm trying to decide which to get.

Better AF is certainly high on the list of wants. Resolution I'm not too hung up on, 24MP is ok for me. Can focus point be selected using screen as touch-pad with the M6 II while using an optional EVF? I haven't found a way to do that on the M6.

Watch for a discount from Canon USA for a refurbished M6II on or after black Friday ?

Or a discounted M50II for that matter !

Oh absolutely.  I’ve “preached” that from the beginning myself   .  IMO nothing else comes close… so far.

Plus, people love the M series for blogging!

I take it they like the small form factor and easy setup a lot.

It’d be a good question to ask RLight too (he has both too).

I’m biased because I love the M6ii’s form factor (no EVF, and tilting LCD), and since I use Spot AF exclusively with it, the AF performance has been brilliant.  The number of controls is also to my liking.  There are a whole host of other features and IMHO everything combines to produce an incredibly satisfying shooting experience.

There are a lot of M50 and M50II owners out there !

It would be nice if more joined in the fun here at the M forum.

Still remember the first time I picked up a M50.

It was at Best Buy. Bought one refurbished that was marked down at the Canon USA store of course.

It was $370 or so with a lens. I guess I could get almost that for it on ebay now ?

Got the M50II refurbished marked down too. Was going to check it out then flip it.

No hurry.

I like the M50II focus peaking and how easy it is to use with my manual focus 7artisans Photoelectric 35mm f/0.95 Lens too.

I like the M50II.    Sigma 56mm is crazy sharp on that camera.

Still love my M6II.

Hmm, I agree about the tilting screen, Although I do have the tilting EVF, which is great. Being able to have EVF or small form factor is good. Losing a control wheel would feel like a step down too. Someone said they thought the M50ii had more up to date, better eye AF, how much better though? Does the M6ii has a proper intervalometer, rather than the low res 'time lapse movie' mode of the M6 (and M50ii?) ?

Lenses sharp at f/1.4 sure make that easier to do and stay under ISO 6400.

Today is the two year anniversary of Canon's announcement of the M50 Mark II, which was just a minor update of the 2018 version.

I don't expect it to happen, but it would be nice if Canon "shocked the world" by releasing a new M model.

Don't you miss IS in the Sigma 30 or 56 lenses?

Most of my shots have people in them and I like 1/125 sec or faster for people.

Lenses sharp at f/1.4 sure make that easier to do and stay under ISO 6400.

Yes higher shutter speed, I try that too. Sometimes I use 2 sec timer to reduce camera shake. Apparently I am not a good button pusher. I have the sigma 30mm but am hesitating for the 56mm. Maybe black friday but price of that lens is very stable. Very few discounts on that lens.
