Pany GH5 vs G9

Why is it that GH5 is a more popular camera for video than the G9. Looking at the spec, it seems G9 is a very competent camera for video.

Were the G9's video features there in the initial firmware?

I think that Andrew is on the right path; There were video features added to the G9 in later firmware that improved its video capabilities. I think with the ORIGINAL firmware of the G9, there was a more significant difference in video functionality between the GH5 and the G9.

I think the G9 with current firmware IS a pretty competent video camera. The GH5 (and even more so, the GH5 II) do have more complete video features (like All-I recording, plus several others... just not sure what the G9 still lacks).

As an aside, I still keep thinking about getting an m43 video camera (I have an Olympus E-M1 II which is pretty capable in its own right). Maybe something like an E-M1 III just so I can record ProRes RAW out (which I believe the E-M1 III can do). Although with the ridiculously low cost of the full-frame Panasonic S5 (you can get a bundle sale of the S5 plus the 20-60mm kit lens for $1,800 during the frequent sales for the package), it is kind of hard to justify spending the same amount on an m43 bundle.

Because it's the fifth iteration of a product. A successful one, IMO. G9 seems more like a one shot.

Differences in image quality between both is minimal, as well as features. Both are very good.

Had both and the G9 has better image quality at higher iso. Also the stabilization and AF (with last update) is better. But the G9 can only record 4k60 for 10 min and 4k30 for 30 min while the GH5 can do unlimited and has still some more video features missing from the G9 firmware.

That would probably seal it for me. GH5 was made for video.

Technical quality is very good, but do your homework on AF for video.

GH5 (and the GH series in general) is notorious for its divisive AF video system. Some people don't trust it, others "just live with it" and find ways to make it work. The hard truth is there are other brands with better AF algorithms but lesser technical quality.

I don't use AF when I video. Also, shooting on the wide side, AF is not that critical.

The G9 is a very competent camera and my main video camera. I love it. But the GH5 has:

  1. No recording limit
  2. Anamorphic lens desqueezing
  3. DCI 4k
  4. True 24fps in addition to 23.98 and similarly for other framerates
  5. In-camera LUT monitoring

In addition, someone else mentioned that the G9 wasn't always good for video and it only became so competent through a firmware update.

That being said if you don't mind recording limit the G9 would satisfy most needs.
