Is there a logic to Canon's G series numbering

I have had a G12 for several years, and I converted it to infrared last year, but I miss having a small camera to carry around. I'm looking at a G1X on eBay, and as I did a little searching, I saw a lot of G models with not a lot of logic to the naming. I would think that the G1 would be the first one, and as the numbers get larger, so should the features and the mp, but as I found, no. The G1 X is 14,3 MP; the G12 is 10MP; the G 10 is 14.7MP, is there some logic here?

Re: Is there a logic to Canon's G series numbering

G1 has been announced in year 2000 and was a 3 MegaPixel camera and the 1st from the G-series with 1/8" sensor.

G1X, G1X II and G1X III are cameras with a larger sensors

The "old" small-sensor G series ran from G1 to G16 with a couple of numbers skipped. The general tendency was towards higher Mp counts, but there was indeed a drop in Mp after the G10, supposedly for IQ reasons.

The G models with an X in the name are newer and use larger sensors. There are five different lines: G1 X, G3 X, G5 X, G7 X and G9 X. All except the G3 X have got more than one iteration.

Maybe similar to your question as I too was confuse about their lineup, and there's also other threads here, you just have to Google it but here is mine:

Thanks for the clarification. I just won an auction on eBay for a G1X; it looks like a little upgrade from the G12. Higher MP and larger sensor.

Yes there is ......... Read on

the original small sensor Gs went up in number as they got newer

G1,2,3,5,6,7,9,10,11,12,15,16 . there wasn`t a G8 - it was named the Pro-1 and the Japanese don`t like the number 4 so there wasn`t a G4 either , no idea why no G13 (13 is a western thing) or G14

Then they made the larger sensor G with an X on the end and they were numbered like DSLRs where the lower number represents a superior model such as the 1D series being better than the 5D , 7D etc so we have

G1X , G3X, G5X, G7X, G9X - Like the Single digit DSLRs, these gain Mk2, Mk3 etc as they get newer

I know but I doubt they`d bother about it, I think they simply wanted to jump to 15..

The G15 was  the 1st "G" camera with a CMOS sensor.
