DxO PL6 is out - worth the upgrade ?

DP Review news:

The latest version of DxO PhotoLab 6 includes a new DeepPRIME XD technology that promises even better clarity, especially when editing high ISO images. The software includes numerous new tools and features, like a new working color space.

Anyone tried this yet ? is it worth the upgrade from PL 5 for $99 ?

Thanks, saw these and plowed my way to most of them, but was more interested in the opinion/views of the dedicated DxO PL using crowd at the M forum.

Me too. I'd like to upgrade from PL5, however I have a hard time swallowing a $100 upgrade once a year.... starting to feel like a 'subscription' to me, and I'm pretty happy with Deep Prime and the product as it is, I don't feel a need to move up. But I too will be reading the reviews and reports carefully.

I may hold out and wait for black friday when they typically discount the upgrade price. That's what I did last year.

I did look at some of the early sample comparisons of Deep Prime vs its upgrade Deep prime XD, and didn't think it was a huge difference.... in fact in some cases I preferred the Deep Prime result, found some of the XD results looking too water-color-like for my taste.

I love PL5, and am getting great results with all my cameras, including my M6II. I'll wait until the Black Friday sales to consider an upgrade. Last year they had 50% off on everything, including upgrades (that's when I bought PL5 and Filmpack and the perspective plug in). For around $50 I'm sure I'll pull the plug. I can certainly wait another six weeks (or more). It's not as if PL5 has stopped working.

There's nothing wrong with skipping an upgrade, you still get the upgrade discount next time.  I've not upgraded ViewPoint since I bought it with OpticsPro 9.  (In the bad old days, smart people only bought the even numbered versions of AutoCAD, because AutoDesk introduced new features in the odd numbered versions and actually got them to work in the even numbered versions.)

Oops, I meant "pull the trigger", not "pull the plug". That would be a different thing entirely. That's my ageing brain for you!

I upgraded to PL6.

For me it's worth it just to finally have the ability to drag and drop and stack my projects in the chronological order as I want them.

I'm sure that's a minor thing for most people but for me it's a game changer.

I have PL5 and downloaded the PL6 trial. I quickly ran into stupid bugs: deleting pictures doesn't work properly.

In PL5:

  • press command+backspace
  • picture gets deleted from disk
  • thumbnail disappears from the folder view

In PL6:

  • press command+backspace
  • picture gets deleted from disk
  • thumbnail stays in the folder view
  • thumbnail stays there till you exit the folder and reenter it

I was wading through 200-ish picture from my camera trap, so I went back to PL5 to cull the images and then switched to PL6 to export them to DNG with DeepPrimeXD.

With ISO1600 on an R5 I couldn't spot a difference between regular DeepPrime and the new XD version

So I'm going to wait on both an update of PL6 as well as it going on sale, I personally don't thing it's worth the €99 upgrade fee right now.
