Thinking of selling my brand new X100V

About 9 months ago, I added my name to my local camera store’s waiting list for a black X100V. This past Friday a silver X100V came in and I purchased it.  Also bought the Fuji black case, a NiSi UHD UV  filter/hood.

When I got home, charged the battery and placed an LCD protector on the LCD.  Checked out the camera to make sure it’s working (took a few shots) although shutter count registers “0”. Didn’t even unpack the strap and put it on the camera.

Anyway, thinking about selling the camera for what I paid. Would return it but my local camera store does not accept any returns without a 15% restocking fee (really!).

The camera is beautiful but just does not check all my boxes. I use Leica X series which are growing old, VLUX 114, and Nikon D750s. As different as night and day.

Bottomline, unless I have an epiphany, I will probably sell the camera, if there is no hassle in doing so. In the interim, I’ll keep it in the box.

I must be crazy.

I got exactly the same impression. To the OP: if you're looking for buyers, this isn't the place to do that. If you want some advice on how to get the best out of your camera, then there are plenty of folks here who are well qualified to do so.

If you want to sell it, then please find one of the many sites intended for that purpose (such as the For Sale and Wanted Forum here: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/1056 ).

See, there lies the problem. You settled for something that wasn't what you originally ordered.

When I got home, charged the battery and placed an LCD protector on the LCD. Checked out the camera to make sure it’s working (took a few shots) although shutter count registers “0”. Didn’t even unpack the strap and put it on the camera.

Never install the LCD protector until you've fully checked out the camera. I did that once. As soon as I took it out of the box installed the protector, right before I discovered the camera had a flaw and had to be returned. Wasted a protector I did.

Anyway, thinking about selling the camera for what I paid. Would return it but my local camera store does not accept any returns without a 15% restocking fee (really!).

Well, they can no longer sell it as "new." They'd have to sell it as used, or open box. They probably don't feel like they should take the financial hit because you changed your mind.

The camera is beautiful but just does not check all my boxes. I use Leica X series which are growing old, VLUX 114, and Nikon D750s. As different as night and day.

It can sometimes be a hassle to sell yourself. A lot of tire kickers out there that buy something to try it out and then decide they want to return it (oops) :-).

I must be crazy.

You are in good company.

Out or curiosity, what were you expecting from the X100V that it didn't meet your expectations? Only asking because I've bought and sold several X100 bodies and they never totally fit my kit for reasons I could never explain. If you're going to have to sell it as used, you might as well give it a fair chance before doing so just to be sure. A lot of people LOVE their X100 cameras.

Actually not committed to selling or keeping.

Am aware of other “selling” websites including the Forum on this website. Thanks.

My point was that after waiting 9 months, I thought I would be more enthusiastic.

Re: Thinking of selling my brand new X100V

I ran into this professional photographer at a local store that sells Leila's. He also had some number of Ms, Leica Q/Q2, and lenses out the butt. Anyway, somehow we got to talking about the X100 series cameras, and he said he has them and loves the feel and the results. Based on that encounter I got on the buy list 9 months ago and received it on Friday.

Perhaps I need to just work it for awhile and see if I like the camera.

Have your boxes changed in the last 9 months?

No camera will check all of anyone’s boxes. In fact I find that my favourite ones tend to be those which—whilst having some spark of genius to them—have significant flaws that I need to work around.

Perhaps have a think about which specific boxes it doesn’t tick, and see how you’d adapt to those. Maybe it’ll work out better than you currently think. Maybe not. But in my experience a lukewarm first impression isn’t a reliable predictor of how things will turn out.

A couple of years ago I bought a new Fuji X100F at a good price as the X100V was coming out. I already had the X-Pro2. I liked it, but thought it was an uncessary luxury purchase that I did not need and for a while did not use it.

Now if I want to go small and with camera only, I have learnt to appreciate it for what it is and got photos that I would not have got.

Maybe you need to give it time to see how it fits in with your photography.

A nice camera, that one. If you do decide to sell it, you might want to try reselling it yourself as new online. Due to supply scarcity, they're currently selling for several hundred dollars over MSRP ($1,399.95+tax):

Since you already bought a couple of accessories, it seems like you had strong reasons not only to order the camera, but also be willing to wait so many months in order to finally receive it. From what I've read you seem not even to gave it a real chance, you only got it a couple of days ago, how much did you use it, how often did you get out and take some shots with it?

When I got home, charged the battery and placed an LCD protector on the LCD. Checked out the camera to make sure it’s working (took a few shots) although shutter count registers “0”. Didn’t even unpack the strap and put it on the camera.

That's something which also baffled me at first, however it seems like Fujifilms shutter count works different than some of the other brands. It only registers in steps of a hundred shots. So once you hit 100 on the count, it will show 100. Once you hit 200, it will show 200. I also don't really know why this is important on a new camera.

The camera is beautiful but just does not check all my boxes. I use Leica X series which are growing old, VLUX 114, and Nikon D750s. As different as night and day.

Sort of... I mean the X100V is everything but a new camera, so there are tons and I mean tons of ressources out there to get an idea about what kind of camera you can get. Reviews from technical sites like this one, photography blogs from both professionals, enthusiasts as well as mere amateurs sharing their experiences. Youtube is loaded with tons of videos about the V.

Since you waited so long for a not quite cheap camera, I'd think you knew what you were getting into. You also failed to share why you are having second thoughts or why it does bother you now that you got it. The menu system is quite different from Nikon and Leica, so you need to give it a fair chance in order to handle it.

Keeping it in the box in my opinion is the worst thing you can do. The only way to know whether that camera is for you or not is taking it out and use it. By just letting it sit there the situation won't get any better. The X100V is still in high demand, so selling a pretty much brand new unit second hand will be simple and you should still get a very good price for it. I'd rather use it for a month and, if you really don't like it, resell it for a small hit and take it as loan for de facto renting the camera.

Some people do this to ensure they did not receive a used camera.

Re: Few thoughts

Personally I only check it when there are any hints during unboxing the camera might not be "new". Most of my "new" cameras, at least the Olympus ones, had quite a few shots on the counter anyways, which was due to quality control.

You need to pick a cool destination local to you, and take only that, and try and gel with. Its the same for any prime lens or FFL camera, you need to give it time.

What sort of photography do you normally shoot?

I do exactly this about every third camera. Renting for a week really only gives me time to tinker, but not to bond. I just bought a new Canon M200, shot it for a month, and sold it for the same price. So I was really only out shipping and tax. Much cheaper than renting for that period. I saw the camera in a store back in 2017, and thought it was just so darn cute. So I finally scratched the itch.

I also think this is the best way to stay in touch with what other brands are doing.
