Apple Video Player with Single Frame Capability for Beginner

I want to tell an Apple user what they should use on their computer to view videos single frame.

When I first started looking at single frames in high speed videos, I used Quicktime for Windows PCs. I was very pleased with how it performed. Apple stopped supporting Quicktime for Windows PCs many years ago after some security issue. ?

I see that Quicktime is out now for Apple.

What video player - that comes with a recent Apple computer - is good for single frame advance and viewing and is most like the Quicktime of 10 years ago?

Is there a low cost simple successor to Quicktime in the Apple Store? I paid about $20-30, 10 years ago for Quicktime for PCs.

Emphasis on simple, easy to use, single frame advance, very low cost, Apple product.

I use PotPlayer on Windows - it can single-frame forward and reverse, adjust playback speed faster or slower, and has a ton of other features.  There seems to be a PotPlayer X for iOS, but I have no idea if it's the same software from the same developer or just a name-alike.

Windows Media Player does single frame and was not on my computer. This works.

I just downloaded Windows Media Player for my Windows 10 computer. I set it as my default viewer. It is simple to use. It works well for frame advance but to go back it jumps several frames.

These are my instructions to include those not familiar with Windows computers.

I did the procedure described at the bottom of this webpage - I removed a check in the box next to "Windows Media Player" as described. "OK"? I took that to be the computer shut down icon.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-media-player-12-e8f84f54-cd64-865c-2e83-1d8ec121b5b8

Video of User Instructions - you have to remember this procedure: 1) Right click on middle of video screen. 2) Select "Enhancements". 3) Select "Play speed settings" and a box appears on the video 4) click on forward icon in box.

"Next frame" works perfectly. But when I click the "previous frame" it jumps many frames. ?

After downloading, "Windows Media Player" is in my list of apps under Windows Accessories.  It now works now as my default video player.

To set WMP as default -

under START (window icon)_search in magnifying glass, type "Default Apps"_select "Default Apps"_Click on whatever is your current default video player. A list of other options appears with "Windows Media Player". Select that.

under START _Click the search magnifying glass_Type in "Windows Media Player" as usually done to search the computer or internet. A box allows to open WMP.

START_Search Windows Media Player_Windows download box appears. Selected Windows "Recommended" settings and downloaded it.

I may have left something out, but I don't think so.

For Apple computers apparently Quicktime is available.

That covers single frame advance for my project and any inexperienced computer users.

Stick with the built in software.

QuickTime Player will allow you to advance or rewind frame by frame.

Use the left and right arrow keys respectively.

You can also use J,K & L keys - but for this you need to hold K while tapping J or L.

Tip - space bar is play / pause.

Very Mixed Information on how widely Quicktime is being used. ??

Maybe you know something about this?

I searched to find if Quicktime was still being widely used and supplied on new or recent Apple computers. I would say that more than half of the finds seem to indicate that Quicktime was no longer that active. Suggest searching and reading the information.

A poster posted a link from Apple that indicated Quicktime was still being used.

These two categories of information - wide usage vs hardly used & on the way out - are very inconsistent. Why is that?

It is not very useful for anyone actually considering purchasing a new Apple computer to debate why there is nonsense on the internet.

Here is my personal experience:

On my Apple Air m1, Mac mini m1, and MacBook Pro m1 Quicktime is installed as the default video player. I can send you a signed, notarized picture of it being used on all three if you do not believe me.

You can also go to any Apple store or BestBuy or whatever store near you has these computers on display and verify whether Quicktime is installed.

As to usage, yes, I use Quicktime to play all of my videos, usually 4K HEVC 10bit, sometimes 8K, sometime 5K.

Why do you care how widely it is used? What matters is it is free and works well.

QuickTime Player is current on Mac.

The initial question was specific to Mac. Not Windows. That is a crucial distinction if you are going to search online.

Re: Quicktime Came Installed on Three of My New Apple Computers and I use it "Widely"

I had already been convinced that Quicktime is currently on Apple computers in another recent thread.

To analyze details in tennis matches and strokes, single frame forward and backward shows the details.

From reading the links about Quicktime I had initially concluded that Quicktime had declined in usage. I asked for an explanation of the unusual number of Google finds that QT use had declined.

"Why do you care how widely it is used?"

My purposes - to inform Apple users what video player they might expect to find on their existing computers, how to find it and how to use it. Find them links. These people are average computer users and may not be interested in single frame advance or know anything about video players.

I was a Quicktime user on my Windows PC when Apple suddenly stopped supporting it due to a security issue. That was maybe about 10 years ago. ?

'How to single frame?' is answered:

1) Apple computer - Quicktime

2) Window PC - Windows Media Player (Located -  "Windows Accessories" in the app list after START)
