GH6 Question / AEL & AFL set separately.

Hi Everyone!

THE CHALLENGE:

I am trying to set my GH6 so I can set & lock Focus (AFL) and then, separately, set and hold Exposure (AEL).

That is, I will first point the camera on the item to focus, press AFL to focus lock, and then move to the area where I want exposure to set, and press AEL. Then I will take the shots (multiple, with out having focus and exposure changing).

BACKGROUND:

I have assigned AFL to "up arrow" on the dial (Fn14) and I have assigned AEL to "down arrow" (Fn16).

THE PROBLEM: Once I set either AFL or AEL, then the other function no longer operates. I.e., if I set focus with AFL... it focuses and then holds the focus but disables functioning of the AEL button. Pressing the down arrow (assigned to AEL) does nothing at this point. If I disable focus lock, then the AEL will work again. And, vice versa.

HERE IS MY QUESTION:

1) Am I missing something in how I've setup the buttons, or in the typical functioning of the AEL and the AFL buttons? Is there a different way to accomplish my goal as stated in THE CHALLENGE, above?

I KNOW EVERYONE LIKES TO RESPOND, BUT PLEASE only answer if you actually know the answer, or if you have a GH6 (or similar Panasonic) and you have experimented with the actual issue that I've described. Note also that I am NOT using the AFL/AEL combined function and that I have already read the manual.

Thank you so much to all who respond with the condition above!!

to achieve what you want you need to do this

Set the af on button to AEL set to hold

focus then switch the focus lever to MF then find your exposure and press af on which is ael

Re: GH6 Question / AEL & AFL set separately.

I have figured out one way to do this (for still photos):

1) Press the up arrow (assigned to AFL) to get focus.  And then, press it again to "unlock".  The focus won't change because I have AF turned off.

2) Second, find my spot for AE, and press down arrow (assigned to AEL).

After those two steps, I'll have both focus and exposure locked, after having used the cameras tools to set them (i.e., rather than manual focus or exposure). Then I can take a bunch of shots without having my focus or exposure changing every time.

I think of this as "assisted manual" shooting.

The method above actually does what I want, but I'm still interested in other responses!

These menu systems are so complicated!!

Thank you!

Ken

it does not make sense to use the wheel for this purpose keep the AF ON and if you really want a button for AEL use the front function buttons

But again it is not ideal besides make sure you disable shutter AF to be sure

Not a GH6 user.

Might I ask does GH6 has the Touch AE feature?

On my lower end Pannys, I set AF/AE-L button to AE-L (GH6 is more flexible on this), in Menu I set it to hold. I then lock exposure by the AE-L, do AF by shutter button as normal.

Or if GH6 supports Touch AE, this can also detach the AE point from AF point.

Not clear what the op requirement is I suspect is not fully aware of the fact that you can move the focus area and use spot metering. there is no need to mess around with focus and exposure separately and if there was you would shoot both in manual using exposure aids

Re: GH6 Question / AEL & AFL set separately.

Not quite sure how you have your settings, but here is what I have. ‘AF ON’ button set to AF=ON, shutter button set to AF=OFF.

In AFS mode, AF button will focus and lock while you hold it down, shutter button will AE and lock while it is half pressed and hold when press completed (if either is released and repressed they will initiate new action).

AFC, both provide continuous action, I.e. AF remains actively refocusing and AE continues until fully pressed.

edit: if you want to take multiple shots without changing exposure, use ‘M’ mode.  If you want, set a function button to ‘One Press AE’ to get ‘M’ exposure
