Canon M6, M50,Sony?

Greetings,

My gear was stolen so am in the process of replacing it.  I had been shooting M4/3.  But, am thinking about A Canon M6 I or ii.  Is the ii that much better than the i?  And would either of these be a good option for a hobbiest?   I normally shoot regular camera club activities and street photography.  I had considered the M50,but thought that the M6 was a better shooting experience?  I had also considered A6xxx series.  Any thoughts?

Thanks, lepewhi

I've been very happy with the m6ii for a couple years now. I wear glasses and don't like evf's so got this rather than the m50 and the screen has worked out well (could be better in sunlight).  m6ii has a better sensor too. Not sure they sell the m6ii anymore but I usually buy used gear anyway so i'd go that route (i did get a new m6ii body when it came out)

the m50ii is slightly better than the m50

rumor mill says there might be a new sony with more bells n whistles (and probably a higher price), but who knows when

as usual I suppose it depends what you want to do with it and what lenses you need

happy hunting

I found one new for €1,140 with 15-45 lens and EVF.  I could get the M50ii for considerably less.  But, read that the M6 sensor is really good.  The thing about Sony is no stabilization, plus expensive lenses.

hi, sorry ive no idea of prices, haven't looked at bodies recently. The m6ii sensor is very good, much better than my previous cameras (one of which was a sony)

None of the M series bodies has IS, and only a rare few of the m lenses do, so if thats a must you better check your needs beforehand, oops I meant these lenses review

My most uses lenses are actually EF-S with and without stabilisation so its not critical to me, but I do like the standard M22mm and your needs may differ

I think some of the sony's 6xxx have body IS, I cant remember which ones (perhaps the 6500?)

The M6 II is significantly better than the original M6, especially in terms of operational speed and AF

And would either of these be a good option for a hobbiest?

Pretty much any camera launched in the last 5 years is more than sufficient for a hobbyist.  The true differences between cameras don't really become apparent until you get to the fringe cases like high speed sports or birds in flight.

I normally shoot regular camera club activities and street photography. I had considered the M50,but thought that the M6 was a better shooting experience? I had also considered A6xxx series. Any thoughts?

The M6 II has been discontinued and may no longer be available for purchase new in your country.  Canon has reduced the EF-M lineup to just the M50 II and M200, and by all indications, Canon is slowly discontinuing the M system in favor of crop sensor RF bodies.  While there is a possibility Canon might still launch an updated M50 III or M300, new autofocus lenses being released for the mount looks extremely unlikely.

Take a look at the lens lineups for whatever system you might be considering.  If the current M lineup of bodies and lenses fits all of your needs, then it is still a viable option.  If you are hoping for a body with IBIS, or need a lens that is missing from the lineup, you will need to look to alternate systems.

Besides the crop options you are considering, I would also suggest considering some of the lower priced full frame options.  There is a plethora of inexpensive, used DSLR glass on the market and those lenses still work great via an adapter on the mirrorless full frame bodies.  While those lenses can also be adapted to the crop bodies, the focal lengths and general size tend to be far from ideal compared to the native crop mirrorless lenses.

This is the newest EF-M mount auto focus lens ?

I have considered FF, but I'm 65, and my back says no. I know that some of the bodies are now smaller, however the lenses aren't.

First of all, sorry to hear your gear was stolen. Which camera body were you using? Can this unhappy event be turned to joy by using it as an opportunity to upgrade to a newer camera with the latest AF developments and sensor tech?

There's a lot to be said for staying with the system you were used to using, without having to learn new menus etc. On the other hand, moving to a different system might be exciting/interesting for the different attributes it has. Do your friends at the camera club have spare cameras they could let you try out before you decide?

Re: Canon M6, M50,Sony?

A couple of years ago I too had the opportunity to "start from scratch" and I chose the M50 over the M6ii because it DID have an EVF - I am not keen on cameras that don't give me the option of using an EVF for many reasons such as super-bright days, more accurate control on my focusing etc. I have since upgraded to the M50ii which offers better and faster focusing. I used to be a professional wedding photographer so I think I know a little about photography, but at 63, I have hung my full-frame cameras and use the EF-M system for my photographic needs (which occasionally still includes paid work) and love it.

I am one of the many disgruntled Canon customers that are quite upset by the lack of interest from Canon to continue developing the EF-M system but try as I might, I cannot find anything to lure me away from this amazing system to something else. Sony make good cameras but have terrible UI (user interfaces) and Fuji have a very rich line-up of APS-C cameras and lenses but lack behind on focus performance and just like Sony, have a lousy UI, so I am stuck with Canon.

Hope this helps if you have not already made up your mind.

Good luck

I have a GX80 I was going to put on ebay. Would you like to have it while you settle on a new choice of camera? I'm in the UK. Where are you?

I found a M50ii with a 15-45 and 55-200 lenses for 911€.  I also found a M6ii with one lens and EVF for about 1200€.  I'm leaning towards the 2 lens solution, although I believe the M6ii is a better camera.

How kind.  But I live in Belgium.  I'm considering waiting until next month when prices should lower before and during the Christmas holidays.  I saw a M50ii two lens kit for 911€.  Not sure yet.

Good used examples of those lenses change hands on ebay for around £50 and £200. The 15-45 is a cheap kit lens, and there is sample variation. The older, discontinued 18-55 offers slightly better image quality, I paid £75 for mine from a reputable online camera dealer. The 18-150 is the most versatile option, and the hardest to find on the secondhand market.

Either of the bodies you mention are a step up from the M6 I use.

I found the M6 and EF-M lenses to be a step up in autofocus and resolution from the Nikon 1 and M4/3 kit I'd been using. The physical size and weight is bigger, but the handling and results are good.

Sending a camera to Belgium "for repair" wouldn't cost much for either of us. Let me know if you decide you'd like a loaner while you build a new kit.

M6ii is the better one no doubt but also 289€ extra.

You should ask yourself if you need the performance of M6ii

They both take good picture for a hobbyist.
