Just The Pocket Shooter

Has anyone that typically carries around a larger interchangable lens camera recently committed to a long photo walk or trip with just a small camera like the G series?  I bought the G5XII a year or so ago because I missed having a pocket camera on me all the time like I did 15 years ago (back then it was a Nikon P310 mostly).  But these days I find I don't feel like taking it with me and restricting myself to the short lens or the small sensor.  I'm tempted to force it and go spend a weekend in a city with just my G5Xii and see what happens.  Maybe it will be freeing.  Maybe I'll constantly by blaming missed shots on the camera.

Don’t underestimate the G5x II; I recently was forced to, pretty happy with the keepers. I brought my M6II and M glass in tow, and the G5x II. Because I only had one battery for the M, and airports involved, G5x II was an ideal fallback option. I’ll be dragging it along tomorrow “downtown”, probably.

I went in June for a two week trip with just my G1X Mark III, and I have to say I didn’t feel that I missed much. I was very satisfied with the shots I got. On a few occasions I felt I needed a longer lens. Then again those occasions needed a 200mm focal length that I don’t have and I wouldn’t take on a trip a long lens that weighs 700g anyway, since my main system is a full frame dslr with lenses. I also had a polarising filter that improved my landscape shots and a small tripod for long exposures. I wouldn’t carry a tripod for a large camera.

From 2007 my main everyday camera was a robust, versatile, and very pocketable Canon TX1. Accompanied on travels by a sequence of other models with better low light and wider coverage, which complemented its convenient daylight zoom and macro capabilities, it was replaced by a slightly larger Casio ZR800 with greater versatility. But remained in use for a few more years as a convenient graphic recorder for macro subjects

My wonder is about the experience of going back to something like that after having been using something much larger for years.

Well sort off. For non photo work related trips I started just going with an rx100 vii and rx10 IV.

Now I have switched to my S22 Ultra and the rx10 IV when I want more reach or better overall quality.

My wife enjoys the no lens switching stops too, thus my R5 stays home

I found the TX1 met my needs, and gave me more liberty to reach more remote subjects with its longer zoom. But  for travelling overseas I ended up pairing it with an LX3 and accessory lens, for wider and dimmer subjects .
