This lens is absolutely stunning.

There is a huge improvement over the 85mm 1.2 EF. The sharpness is a dream, and the Lens can even be used to capture fast moving objects in focus. This was impossible with the EF version.

Compared with the EF 85mm 1.8 the new RF 85mm 1.2 is still a little bit faster.

This is now my favorite lens to shoot with combined with Canon RF 15-35mm and Sigma Art 35mm 1.4.

First, I was a bit turned off by the plastic housing of the lens but soon realized that even with a plastic housing it’s a bit heavy and still scratch resistant and robust.

All in all, a very nice lens which is worth the hefty price tag.

Re: Best lens so far

From what I've seen and played with, I would agree with you.

I feel like the RF 85mm F1.2L is the best, as well as the RF 50mm F1.2L and in third place is my RF 28-70mm F2L. Just my opinion, but based on myself being more blown away with the three mentioned above...

This lens is completely deserving of the hype.

It lives on my R5.

Even at 1.2 it out-resolves the sensor with ease.

It’s so amazing that I’m generally disappointed with any other lens.

Pixel-level sharpness and vibrant, natural colours guaranteed.

Can’t sing its praises highly enough.

Yup, absolutely love my 85mm 1.2 DS, I wish they'd put out a 50mm and 35mm DS. it is magical! For portraits I never want to use anything else outside now.

Being able to shoot at 1.2 with confidence my old DSLR, nope..  And yes it outresolves like crazy. Better colors than my RF70-200 2.8 as well.

Re: Best lens so far

For me the the RF50f1.2 is the best lens so far. It is excellent performing and 50mm is very versatile in my use.   My second choice would be the RF 100-500mm which addresses quite a different set of use cases.

Was f/1.2 the best aperture to balance between the most possible back ground blur and enough DOF for the subject?

If subject separation is about enough DOF for the subject as well, the flexibility of f/1.2 can be easily overestimated.  Yes, there's an "if" in that statement.  Nonetheless it's something to consider before paying 3300 bucks.

Nicely done.  You got the focal plane just right.

The outstanding accuracy of Eye Focus has really brought large-aperture lenses into their own.  It almost makes you want to shoot EVERYTHING wide open!

I thought it worked well for this shot.  It seems most full body and even slight closer work well at 1.2.  I'm sure others might do differently.

It is a luxury lens and 1.4 would look similar in dof, that said I didn't just buy it for 1.2 I bought it for the DS character it provides which is quite different than the non DS model.  Plus the colors, contrast are also great on top of being ridiculously sharp.

Thank you!  I used to be scared to even shoot 2.8 on DSLR.              Yes I have to catch myself sometimes and did some of her session at f2 and others as 1.2 was too narrow for certain closer shots. Like the look I was looking for here 1.2 was too blurred so i stopped down a tiny bit.

This back to 1.2 as it still left the building recognizable. Just a personal preference but you can see she is crystal clear, no depth of field issues on her body at 1.2;

You'll need that at f/1.2 and those light conditions.

shoot. (48" photek softlighter just out of frame).

I like the silver lining on her left arm and hip.   Plenty of depth and texture. Well done.

Maybe her right hand is in a bit unnatural position.

Thank you, appreciate the input.  I see what you mean, maybe bring her arm down a touch the next time.    That silver lining was the sun, thought there were some spots I wish I had brought two lights so I could have a rim light when the sun wasn't on her.
