fruit fly, is my opportunism turning into obsession?

I'll admit my macro is opportunistic, if I spot something I'll try and get a picture, but yesterday that turned into a compulsion to splash the cash and get more gear

Its now autumn here (feels like winter), hence in the last couple weeks my outdoors bugs hunts have been unsuccessful

So obviously I jumped at a chance to get a picture of a 1mm fruit fly, knowing that hand held with a 60mm lens was a "bit" of a gamble, even with my loathed extension tubes added and the fly stuck on fly paper, but there was enough of a picture showing to make me realise I wanted something better - if I could just get a stack.

Handheld stacks at this magnification was impossible, too much movement between shots, so that was when I tried adding my tripod, which then made me realise I needed rails - I had tried putting the subject on paper and moving the paper rather than the camera which almost worked

And that was when I realised I needed a portable studio, trying to do this on the kitchen countertop near a window was just about to work - until someone came along and wanted to use the kitchen for its intended purpose, at which point my play time was over for the day

Gear obsession is kicking in, I wonder what xmas will bring ...

not the best pic, wings are a nice colour, but think of the potential ...

regards

Jim

I like the photo.

I am not an entomologist but looking at the antenna makes me think that fruit fly is not the correct name.  It may be a fungus gnat.

There are three different types of antenna for flies.

I think your right, and also that I’m probably overwatering my house plants causing them to hang around
