Link to simple guide to controls/settings?

Hi, I'm a Nikonite, a pal has asked me to help her move beyond Auto on her 750D. Of course, everything is different with you lot,  can soemone point me to a simple but thorough user guide?

Guessing it will need menu delving or custom buttons to go full manual so will suggest Shutter or Aperture with Canon version of AutoISO. What's that called in Canonese?

Thx in advance

Dweeble,

One thing you might suggest to your friend is to do a Google search for User Manual Canon 750D.

Download the Manual and use the Search function in the pdf file.

It changed my life.

And yeah, the easiest thing to move off of full Auto is to select one of the semi-Auto modes like Av (aperture priority), TV (shutter priority), or P (Program)  mode with Auto ISO.

Tell her that she can use Av for still subjects and TV for moving subjects.

Thanks!

TV for shutter? You Canon people are weird

Quick specific question - if she goes manual, is there a button which can be set as a function button to switch the dial between controlling aperture and shutter speed?

Dweeble,

Yes, we revel in our weirdness

I think Tv stands for time value (but don't quote me on that).

It's been a long time, but I don't think there is a button to alternate between aperture and shutter.

If I remember right, If she's in manual, she has to hit the Q button and then the arrow keys to move from shutter speed to aperture, move the main dial to change it, and then hit the set key to enter it.

TV & AV

Yeah, Canon is slightly weird with TV (timevalue)  and AV (aperture value).

Perhaps the easiest thing to do would be to watch a video: there are dozens of good ones out there.

This is where I realise why I love the D300 despite it's 12MP and blizzard of noise above ISO 800

No... that's not quite correct. She needs to hold down the EC (exposure compensation)  button while turning the dial, and there is no enter key pressing needed.

Unless... she's using the touchscreen. I don't have any experience with canon touchscreens. You had better ask someone else.

BTW I agree with you on the pro cameras level of control - I use a canon 7D, your D300's arch rival!
