Canon RF 35mm f1.8 Macro IS STM

Canon In case anyone was wondering about the RF 35mm f1.8 Macro IS STM (aka the "poor man's macro lens"), I thought I'd post a couple of images I took with it in my backyard the other afternoon.

Aside from the fact that fauna aren't the most cooperative of subjects, I found it occasionally difficult to get a good macro focus with my EOS R7 (I presume a higher-quality true macro lens would get in more detail), but when everything clicked in to place (so to speak) I found the level of detail quite nice.

Canon EOS R7, RF 35mm f1.8 Macro IS STM, 1/320 sec., f8.0, ISO 640 (Macro Mode)

Canon EOS R7, RF 35mm f1.8 Macro IS STM, 1/320 sec., f8.0, ISO 200 (Macro Mode)

Canon EOS R7, RF 35mm f1.8 Macro IS STM, 1/320 sec., f8.0, ISO 640 (Macro Mode)

These are meant to be demonstrative but comments and criticisms are welcome!

exposure is too bright, your handshake has mad the images to be not so sharp. i'd practice a lot and improve my skills. thanks for sharing.

good luck.

Thanks for the feedback BlueRay2.  I was wondering if the out-of-focus areas were due to my handshake (even with the image stabilisation) or if it was due to the lens (which by all accounts isn't a "real" macro lens, but I have no standard to judge against).  I'll try adjusting brightness as well.  Thanks again!

Not sure that's hand shake at those shutter speeds. Could be just very thin dof at macro distances.

Yeah, I was wondering.  I've taken quite a few macro pics, and it seems that there is a very small DOF in macro mode (I use the automatic Macro mode on the R7).  That would make sense, given that it isn't considered a "real" macro lens (which would surely cost much more).  It seems to me that focus bracketing might be a way out of that dilemma, but with very small moving subjects that could prove difficult.

Maybe try stopping down the aperture and using a flash.
