Re: Eagle and Osprey wouldnt come out

I know someone that would use one of those large Canon 600mm FL lenses on a tripod.  It seemed to work pretty well.  He would just walk around with the tripod, camera and lens all together.  He would set it up and away he would go.  I haven't used a tripod yet because I am too mobile and so far I can keep my hands steady.

Your backyard birds are winners.  I sure enjoy seeing them.

Yes very different, it has many advantages the best being able to get a real idea about exposure, I tend to lean towards the edge of under exposure, I just like darker backgrounds and brighter subject sometimes in my opinion gives a look like flash was used when it wasnt. The EVF makes that very easy. Something I would consider a disadvantage it makes me lazier, With my DSLR I have to pan and be dead on with my focus point with the R7 I can be a bit slower as long as I stay close the subject/eye detect will keep bird in focus throughout the frame so I wonder how long it will be before the art of mastering tracking will be lost, also with the in camera stabilization on top of the lens stabilization I dont have to be as careful with how I am bracing the camera, when I first got it I tested in my house 1/15 second hand held 100-400MKII mounted and shot was sharp. Now of course as I am aging and getting more hand shake that is nice, but again how long before the only thing important to shooting will be the operators eye for framing and thats it? Who knows maybe the R50 will even suggest best framing and do that as well? Can you tell I am getting old? Screaming from the roof tops the robots are taking over? For me shooting a minimum of 100 shots a day just because I love being out in nature and my shots are just more memories of the day its great and does give me better looking memories. But you guys shooting older gear and making them look stunning are the real artist regardless of gear.

The art of panning is something I'm hoping to someday master. I envy you.

I wouldn't say any of my photos are stunning, certainly compared with what you can find on the DPR forums.

Practice, practice, and practice I guess.

In the regards to the R50, there is already a canon camera that uses AI to zoom and frame shots - the Canon Powershot Pick . So who knows?

I don't think those are sunflowers, very nice.

Sorry to be a critic.

Jethro,

I think you're right. They may be some kind of Daisy.

The operators eye along with timing and anticipation have always been the most important things until very recently.

I am not getting any younger and I'm still "old school". How many keepers do you want and how many do you actually need". I still use the "old school" rule of shutter speed set to a minimum of 1/(2x lens focal length or equiv. focal length) when hand holding.

Photos below are with my Canon 80D and 1995 100-300mm L. No IBIS, no lens stabilization.

Re: Eagle and Osprey wouldnt come out

There's lots of beautiful blue sky and sunny weather.  These must have been taken in California if I remember right.  I like the surfer picture the best.

I love the bright yellow color.  I hope this year I can visit a farm that has fields of sunflowers (like I did last year).

Cool!

I  have the non L-series of that lens, mine is just a few years younger (still pretty old though). Apparently the L version has better IQ, but slower AF. Or so I'm told.

Beautiful, and I agree. That is actually an issue well I don't know if issue is the right word but, now I am spending more and more time looking and trying to decide what to keep and what to toss with the R7. Of course there are flat out misses those are the easy ones, but when you have 30 frames in a row to really look hard at to decide what you like best truly gets tiring. I am not a fan of post work anyway.

Re: Eagle and Osprey wouldnt come out

Yes, the AF is much slower than by today's standards, but fast enough for my 3 fps shooting.

I bought the lens new in 1995 for $560 (US). Using a 3% US inflation rate, it is worth about $1100 today.

If used correctly, it is very sharp with good contrast.

Re: Eagle and Osprey wouldnt come out

I am also considering the R7, because of its versatility packed into a smaller and lighter package for travel than my 80D. The 80D is only worth about $400 in trade-in. I have 7 EF and EF-s lenses that I also want to use on DSLR. I like having 2 bodies when I am traveling by car. If I bought the R7, the only lens I would buy is the RF 24-105mm and keep it on the body all of the time.

If I pro-rate the $400 loss out to 10 years of usage, that is 40/year. I spend a lot more than that on Scotch every year. As I told my brother once, if spending a certain amount of money on your hobby won't make any difference in the rest of your life, do it. Just don't do it too often.

Re: Eagle and Osprey wouldnt come out

I loved my 80D,bought the 90D because I had over 300k clicks on the 80D,then my 90D went well over 500k probably closer to 700k. So I thought it was time to give mirror less a try. At first really considered an R5 but that just seemed like a ton of money for something I wasn't sure I would like, plus 90% of my shooting is birds. Then they announced the R7 and for me at the price point was a no brainer.

Re: Eagle and Osprey wouldnt come out

The 90D is still in the back of my mind for a DDLR trade in. How was your experience with it for birding? I do birding about 40% of the time now, action about 40% and the rest for everything else.

The R7 or any other mirrorless would be part of my travel and carry everywhere package.
