Used EF 100mm f2.8L Purchase Price?

I found someone locally who is selling a kit (50D, 28-135, 70-300, and EF 100L), and they agreed to potentially just sell me the 100L. I was wondering what a reasonable top end price would be? I see prices on MPB and ebay, but Id like some more experienced answers.

Obviously I would go test the lens before handing over any money, I plan to bring a light to inspect for scratches, dings, and fungus. I also would either try and get an EF to RF adapter and test on my R6, or I have access to an SL2 I could use to check basic functionality.

Ive never bought used before, so any assistance is appreciated.

Im interested in better macro capabilities as well as portrait work (RF 35mm is doing all the work right now).

you can use eBay: select all completed items, then order by ascending price and have a look at which price used stuff is usually sold…

Use KEH as an indication of what a reputable seller would sell a lens with a warranty for.

Not knowing where you are makes it a bit harder. I bought one in Australia 2½ years ago (just as Covid was starting). It was in mint condition, and included the hood, pouch and box. It cost me AUD500 / about US$350. It was advertised privately on Gumtree.

For a private sale as is with no warranty, and assuming the lens looks very good when you inspect it, I would say the top end price would be US $500-600. Any more than that I would be thinking “why not get a warranty”. By the way, a lot of people think the non-L Canon 100 macro is just about as good, and it’s a lot less expensive used. Check out what Optical Limits has to say about the non-l.

You need IS when you shoot at indoor without flash because you have to stop down a lot for macro.

The used price seems rising a bit this year. Private sell price is flexible, sometimes patience will payoff.

Only if you are trying to hand hold at macro distance, which is not easy anyway. Canon only claims 2 stops of IS at MFD. If you use a tripod and a remote trigger or timer you don’t need IS.
