Sigma SD15 and IR Filter

Hello, I got my SD15 today but the IR filter was not in place. It also seems a bit dirty to me. Do I need to insert the IR filter or can I use the camera without it? Thanks!

PS: Is there a manual on how to clean and insert the filter?

Well done!

Strictly speaking, an "IR filter" is one that passes IR but blocks visible light.

The Sigma "dust-cover" does the opposite, so some call it a "UV/IR blocking filter".

Some might be being pedantic, however.

The use of the word “filter” without more information is ambiguous.  In common usage, for example, the term “UV filter” refers to one that blocks UV.

Agreed.

Not unlike "resolution" which means all things to all men ...

PS: Is there a place (in Europe / Germany) where you can still buy such a IR blocking Filter for the SD15?

For your information, the SD1 Merrill filter also fits with very little difference in color.

Great! Thanks for the information! Does the SD14 Filter fit also?

I think so - maybe someone else here can confirm that.

They are physically interchangeable - but for some reason they have different Sigma part numbers. The only reason for that can be filter characteristics but I recall one time mixing up the SD15/SD1Ms and do not recall much of a difference. Others here might know better ...

Yes the Sd14 and Sd15 internal plastic holders are identical.  The filters aren't.  The Sd15 filter blocks UV and IR better than the Sd14 filter.

I thought the internal plastic holder for the Sd1M filter was different.  I never tested one in my Sd14. But the uv and ir blocking of the Sd1m and Sd15 filters was the same. The sensor in the Sd1m is larger than in the Sd15.

Re: Sigma SD15 and IR Filter

I got the information from Sigma Germany that they offer the filter for the SD15 for 53,55 Euro.
