Hope it works as well with the 12 as it does with the 11 and it gives proper RAW DNGs likewise .

As for handling, no I don`t like phone handling either and the larger MAX versions make it harder even with a square edged back case on to help stop dropping it but lets face it, soapbar compacts like the S90-110 and RX100 series are no more fun to use, the canon G7X/G5X-II are better but it takes a cam like a G5X mk1. LX100-II etc with proper controls, a decent fixed EVF and a grip to dramatically separate camera from phone handling wise

Do you regard the S120 as a "soapbar"?

never used (or even seen) one , had an S90 for years. don`t get me wrong, I liked the S90 a lot but there wasn`t anything there to make it more pleasurable to shoot with than a modern mobile phone (Phones of its time were horrendous for photo quality of course )

Another proof - lots of these old cameras just work -  no better explanation.  I think we keep moving up and thinking we are gaining by leaps and bounds, then sometimes reflect back and try some of the old ones again and wonder why we kept replacing them over and over.

In boredom during the covid lockdown mess I ended up using my back bedroom closet as my camera store and kept going back there and getting something different to shoot and play with.  Through the process I have at least three older cameras that never made it back to the obsolete closet - they are now part of the active tool kit again.

Don't know what possessed me to quit using them in the first place.

In case you missed it there was a recent post in open forum about older cameras, and I suggested maybe we could get a forum for vintage (criteria to be established) camera forum to include all manufacturers, the only criteria being the vintage, or classic, or whatever designation. there seemed to be some interest, but doubt it will happen. But I would love such a forum.

Another one I`d re-try is the G10 , IMO by far the best in that series - that maligned (by reviewers , not users) 15Mp sensor was fantastic in RAW  in Capture one and gave a big increase over the supposedly newer and better G11/12 and even the G16 because the G10 had 5 (or 3 with the G16) more Mp so not only the most detail , but was the sharpest too (guessing no AA filter) and the 14Mp RAW files weren`t much if any noisier than the G12 when resized down to the same size . Very very underrated camera which stands up today and handles far better than the G7X/5X Mk2 / RX100 series and carries a proper battery (same as the SX50 and G1X Mk1 )

Shame is that most of that series suffered scratched front elements due to the poor design of the lens cover . finding an unscratched G10 in nice nick will be a challenge.

The sx50 is a special camera for sure. The best of the Canon series IMO and with the used prices and the size, really one we "all" should own. As far as super zooms I prefer the P1000 and P950 but they are much bigger, specially the monstrous P1000.

And of course the sx50 can't touch my rx10 IV but there is a BIG price difference there. The only issue that always bothers me about the sx50 is the EVF. Sure af is not amazing and is a bit sluggish but all that I can deal with  when I use it. The EVF is the painful one but still, you can work with it.

Would be nice to get the same 12mp sensor size with modern enhancements.

Nothing can touch the RX10/4 except the Mk3 which is the same camera minus PDAF and a very rudimentary touchscreen - the lens is very special , miles ahead of the mediocre optics which the other 1" sensor superzooms have INCLUDING the Mk1 and mk2 and that's why these two Sonys are so ludicrously expensive , this is the one case where you get what you pay for (the RX100 Mk7 is the total reverse - costs over a grand and the lens isn`t special in the least)

Pretty how much I see it .

agreed - same lens too - the SX60/70 messed it up - Hoping Sony don`t screwup the RX10 Mk5 when they decide to make one by changing the lens .

And I agree about your rx100 vii comment. As nice as it is and I like it more than any other similar size camera, I feel the lens specially at the long end is not good enough to really make it worth it over the 240mm range of my S22 Ultra.

During my comparisons the results between the 2 were too close for my taste. Sure the sony handles better than a phone and has better af etc but I decided that the s22 ultra for 13mm shots and the rx10 IV for when I want a better camera are a better combo for travelling than having the rx100 vii

Boxed Minter here at LCE for £110 - Obviously if it sells the link will dump you on LCE's home page so get it while its there, IMO the best RAW shooting bargain in "phone-sensor" hypermegazooms

Well its been a few weeks (and samples)
5

Had it a few weeks now and amazingly I`m appreciating it far more than the first one nearly 10 years ago !! . probably because of a combination of my expectations being lower (nowadays is compared to a phone not DSLRs) and what it cost but image quality in RAW stands up today

A few examples casually shot on walkabout

pixel peep in the galleries "original" size available

And the obligatory 1200mm Moon shot

Very nice photos!

There's a lot more detail than what I can get from my SX410IS. I'm considering changing to a better model sometime, perhaps even a SX50 HS! Definitely one with RAW, though I haven't used my powershot much since I got my first DSLR (I'm currently on a canon 7D).

Hey thanks - SX50s can certainly be had cheap enough and the lens/sensor is a sweet spot , nice and small camera too (not bigger than a FF DSLR + F2.8 standard zoom like the Nikon P1000)

3:- how bad the EVF is , wow its as bad as 2004 ones and switching from LCD to EVF means lotsa presses, no single EVF/LCD button let alone auto switching

I only have to press Disp once to switch between the two. I can't remember the details, but this is from my notes when I configured it: ”In the shooting menu, can set custom display, and turn off 2 and 4 so that it's one press to switch”.

Good Grief - Battery life !!
1

I can`t remember how long I got out of the batteries in the SX50 last time but my old (over 10 years old) G1X battery which I had charged ready to go in the SX50 when I got it is STILL going now and has taken 602 shots , its showing "Red" 1 bar and has been for some time, I seem to remember the G1X going for ages like this - lasted ages on full bars then dropped to 2 then quickly into the red where it lasted ages .

I`ll run it flat as it prob needs Calibration and then finally get to try the battery which came with the camera . even as it stands , 602 shots is DSLR territory, way more than most MILCs let alone battery chewers like the G5X Mk2

Anyway a link to my SX50 gallery for those intetrested in seeing the image quality in RAW in Capture One .. full size images (Click original) , mix of test shots and ones casually shot on walkabout
