I was reaching for the remote control to turn on the TV, just as my wife happened to turn on the flashlight on her cell phone, and I went,

"Whoa!"

Some Wildlife - Thanks

Thanks.  Yes, we have to wait until the migration begins.  Then we will see more birds.

That's normal to be shy taking pictures of people that you don't know personally.  I've done it so much, that it's easy for me.  Sometimes people object, but for me that's only about once every year or every two years.  Since I take pictures every week and a lot of times more, that makes it quite rare.  My suggestion is to Just begin to explain what you are doing, if asked.  You might say I like your kayaks or something like that.  Sometimes if they see you with your camera, you can wave also.  I try to do that sometimes and wave while I'm taking the photos and many times I'll get a lot of nice smiles.  I wish I would do that more, but often I'm concentrating so much on the technical aspects of the photography, that I'll forget.

That is an unusual photograph.  I wasn't expecting that; good job showing something different!

Thanks. For the BIF, I was fortunate to have had the shutter speed high enough. I wasn't expecting the egret to take off like that, and I had to use whatever setting I had in the camera.

Hi Digirame,

Same thing happened to me yesterday taking little Egrets in the harbour, it flew off as I was taking static shots of it and I had to use whatever setting were in the camera, no time to play about.

Brooklands lake

Brooklands Lake:

A man walking down a path.

A bench by the lake

The lake

A closer view of the lake

A coot. I'm rather disappointed with this one, as the camera slightly missed focus. Even with DxO's corrections and denoising it's still not fully sharp.

The boardwalk by the lake

The lake

And another of the lake.

Enjoy!

Re: Brooklands lake

Hi Dunlin,

The third and especially the last photo are super shots. With the coot was that the only photo you took????

You'll find wildlife shots are hard to nail focus wise, you're moving the ducks moving, you've camera shake as well. Don't trust your focusing system either, thats why I've almost 70,000 photos using my 7D mkII that has a great focusing system. I need sharp pictures and the only way I can guarantee sharp is to take more photos, there will be one that you'll look at that makes you smile.

And by the way I think the 7D's shutter is good for about 150,000 actuations so don't panic yet.

No. I took around a dozen, about 10 of which I kept.

Well, I'm experimenting with AF. I think the main problem is the camera was repeatedly focusing on the bird's body, rather than it's eyes.

I was using the centre AF point, with 4 assist points, with Servo AF. It's not too easy to keep a swimming bird's head aligned with 1 AF point at 300mm on a lens without IS.

I think I need a combination of practice, a L-series (sharper) lens with IS, and perhaps eventually the 7D mk2.

And by the way I think the 7D's shutter is good for about 150,000 actuations so don't panic yet.

I'm around 55K, so I've still got a way to go. Anyhow, the camera is still under warranty for another 22 months, so either way I don't need to worry.
