Great always on 24mm lens for the smaller budget
1
Hello all,
I thought I'd share my experiences with this little lens here.
Background is me absolutely liking 24mm focal length. 20 mm is a "nothing real" focal length and 28mm is too narrow.
So I was waiting for this lens to appear and it completely meets my expectations.
Use cases:
- for walking around a light, little lens was needed with a proper wide angle of 24 mm
- I expect to shoot it at F5.6 most of the time due to subjects at these angles being quite 3dimensional, so proper DoF is needed
- I will use it for video, more wide open
- I will use it for macro around F8
- I will use it for other close up stuff, even people at F1.8
Findings:
- pretty sharp lens even wide open and to the edges, if you use the correct lens profile
- very sharp stopped down at little
- AF is precise and low noise (as typical for STM); very smooth for video
- best results so far using ooC or DPP using Canon's own profile
- lens is actually a 22mm lens where the profile removes the outer edges. I actually love this as for many scenic subjects the distortion is not relevant and I can make use of the free extra 2mm. Stopped down to F5.6 it is all fine.
- wide open extreme corner coma is strong, but I have to say I have zero use cases where this had any relevancy
Accepting the fact that inflation and crises have made everything quite expensive I do consider the price to be very fair (assuming >$2000 is the "high" bracket; $1000-2000 is the "medium" bracket and < $1000 is the low price bracket in the shrunken pro/enthusiast market of 2022).
So I recommend it to anyone wanting a walk around 24mm lens.
