New TTartisan 25mm f2

Hi,

If I'm not mistaken I'm the first in the world noticing it (lol), but looking at the page of TTartisan lenses I found this page:

https://ttartisan.myshopify.com/products/aps-c-25mm-f2

It seems like a new lens coming today with a design very similar to the FF 50mm f2 released lately

Between the 23/2.0 and especially 27/2.8, I have zero need for this lens. But wow, does it look like an appealing offer! Especially at 55 USD(!!).

Great to see that it shares a filter thread with the equally compact 50/2.0 - write that down, Fuji.

At 9999$ it would have been a bit of a hard sell…glad to see they discounted to 55 :)))

Anyway, this must be new, i knew they had a 50mm f2 that looks similar. I‘m tempted to buy this 25mm

The store page states "on sale from Sept 2nd" and the embedded video also was uploaded to YT today.

So it does look like this is fresh off the press.

To my mind there’s always room for (a) lenses with appealing character and (b) a proper manual focus experience (which AF lenses just don’t provide, though the clutched ones come close). I’ve got the Pergear 25/1.8 which firmly ticks both of those boxes but I could use one which is manual but with a more neutral image… no idea if this will be it.

Don't you make me buy this and the TTa 50/2.0 as I am trying to offload other Chinese lenses.

At these prices, however,... God damn it.

Great to see that it shares a filter thread with the equally compact 50/2.0 - write that down, Fuji.

Slightly miffed that it’s not 52mm though, personally 🙂

With the lens measuring 59mm across, it may have been tricky to get a filter thread wider than, say, 49mm.

I’ve had the 50 sitting in my Amazon basket for a few weeks now 😀

I misread it initially as 49mm. Most of my filters are 37, 43, 52 or 72, so it’s ok. To be honest I don’t even use filters much anyway.

The thing I don’t understand is that the Chinese brands are knocking out countless 50mm lenses, almost as many 35s, and a fair few 25s, but where are the 16-18mm lenses? I can only think of the TTArtisan 17mm off the op of my head, and it looks like a chimney pot. There’s the 7Artisans UFO, but that doesn’t count.

I’d really like a manual 18/2 pancake for street (make it clickable zone focus and take my money) but for some reason there seems to be a bit of a vacuum there.

Awesome! Thanks for heads-up. I've been so waiting for the Chinese to start making some nice manual focus pancakes.. and this looks like a decent one.. MTF graph looks pretty decent for a classic double-gauss type design, and looks a touch sharper that the 23mm f1.4.. Also looks like v little field curvature issues stopped-down.. sweet!

(I ordered 2x copies (just to check for sample / build quality variation) )

I've been shooting with the 23mm 1.4 for about 6 months now and I love it. I accidentally dropped it in a river upstate new york and it is still kicking.

I love pancake lenses, but not sure if I need this. The 23mm is already pretty compact. Alright, I'll give it a try.

From the brief google’ing I’ve done this looks like the same optical design as 7Artisans 25mm f/1.8.

I am a fan of TTArtisan build quality, maybe I will give it a try.

Edit to say their 50mm f/2 looks to be the same optical design as 7Artisans 50mm f/1.8 as well.

The complexity goes up as they get wider and so does the potential for nasty optical defects. They seem to be happy targeting the low cost market and maybe are hesitant to venture above that. Only a minority of people appreciate these Chinese lenses for their 3D pop and "vintage" look. The average YouTube reviewer just likes them because they're "pretty sharp for how cheap they are". Take away the cheap and the YouTube reviewers that drive the market will just label them "soft in the corners" overpriced crap.

I'm with you though, would love some more sub-20mm options. Going to try out the 7Artisans 12mm to see if it cuts it before I shell out for the Touit.

Yes, you are right; the optical design looks the same, but the mechanical design looks to be completely different. I've never warmed to the 7artisan's version shape and form, and it also received comments for not-so-great build quality. I do like the shape / form of the TT one..

I am hoping since this is a new release | generation build quality would be better, but what does disconcerts me slightly is their need to build down to such low prices.. I would be happy to pay twice the price and know it has better build quality and QA..

The main optical negatives I read for the 7artisans version are rather strong vignetting  and barrel distortion. Let's see if TT have made any improvements on this..

I tried the 7Artisans, didn’t think all that much of it—it has character but personally that didn’t float my boat with an ultra wide angle. YMMV. Optically the Samyang/Rokinon is much “better” and that’s the one I kept. I shall find out next week whether the Laowa Cookie dethrones it…

Ordered my copy last week

I ordered it last week already, because the TTA 23/1.4 goes back to my X-E2, and this TTA 25/2 would go either way on my E1, or X-M1, the latter one without a EVF, would make a nice, small combo for street photography.

The MTF from the TTA 23/1.4 and this 25/2 are close together, but i guess the corner performance would be at least acceptable, good enough @F/8...because the reason is, i do have much better lenses than this small pancake, but i need by design an adapter, which makes other pancakes from the 70-80's bigger, on my Fujifilm.

I need a small combo, mostly for the X-A series, and also the M1, this should make a good enough street combo, whereas corner performance is not a top priority. I still own my X100 LE, but seriously, the M1 paired with this lens is still worlds cheaper, has 16 MP & X-trans, and for the case something really bad happens, i don't ruin my better gear...

Good Light, a fine weekend !

Re: Got it!

Received mine today. -Ordered direct from TTartisan official shop. Total 10 days to the UK via Fedex (from China).. That's v good..

Initial impressions seems good; -the usual TTartisan (very good) build quality, which is impressive considering the price. Seems TTartisan bought in existing optics from elsewhere (most likely same source as used by 7Artisans for their 25mm f1.8). Reason I say this is because I can see, behind the front element, they have placed a circular baffle, to effectively limit the front element aperture, to bring it down to f2 spec..

Looks and size is really nice.. (The front element is fairly recessed, so if they had wanted to they could have easily shaved 5-6mm off the length to make it truely pancake.. Nevermind, I'm happy with it :-))
