70 - 200 2.8 S Collar Ring won't Lock

I have very new Nikon 70 - 200 2.8 S. Collar ring won't  lock anymore, no matter how tight I screw the knob. Any solution without sending lens for service ?

I certainly wouldn't send the whole lens in. It's probably just the mechanism on the foot itself. The lens has a dovetail fitting. I'm assuming you are having problems with just the foot?

As much as it's a bummer. I'd be inclined to call B&H and get a price on a new one. You could try contacting Nikon but I bet it costs you hours and hours.

Foot is ok... but a ring keeps circulating around a lens ( strange ) .... I really try tight up  and uptight but n matter what irruption I do once hit a limit it still moves very easily

I think the key word you used was “anymore” meaning it did lock firmly before when tightened, but not anymore? Could you have inadvertently over tightened the knob with screw? I know that when I first got my Z 70-200mm I fiddled with that locking screw to get the foot collar firmly locked and it felt as though there was some risk for damage from over tightening so I was careful. Still odd that it doesn’t lock the collar now as I would expect the screw thread to sheer first. Does the screw knob itself fully tighten or does it keep turning? I just leave my lenses with the foot collar locked in the six o’clock position and never touch them due to the fact I rightly or wrongly feel a bit worried I could damage them through over tightening. I prefer to hand hold with lens foot resting in the palm of my hand anyway (for landscape orientation shooting that is).

Are you in the US and did you buy the lens from B&H? If you have had the lens for less than 30-days they’ll exchange it. Not ideal, but B&H are extremely accommodating and understanding, even in situations where it could be argued that the customer has accidentally damaged the product. Happy, well taken care of customers tend to come back…

Depending on how new “very new” is and the lack of any actions on your part to cause the problem, one solution is to return it to the store you bought it from as a defective item and have them give you another new one that functions properly.

I have this lens maybe 5 months. Before i could lock without any issue. Now screw still can be tight as before, but this do nothing as ring keeps rotating.
Maybe it was damage. i used for last 2 weeks with my Black Rapid strap during my Trek

So no one has issue like this with this lens ?

This is serious issue in case I would like to use this lens for video. Without locking tripod collar in horizontal position, lens will always shift.

What a cheap screw knob they use.... I did use my old version from 2009 for 12 years and knob works as it did in first day

I'm not sure why your conclusion is "what a cheap screw knob they use."  Anything can break.  I have been on the Nikon forums for 20 years now and have never heard anyone post that the collar wouldn't tighten and lock in place anymore.

By comparison, I've heard multiple posts of lens mounts cracking or coming off the body.

I have the 70-200 and 100-400. Similar collars and same foot. The only issue I had on my 70-200 is the dovetail piece on the lens was loose. Four small screws needed to be tightened. If they come loose again I'll use lock tight.

But you are 1000% correct that this is a huge problem for video. I wish I could say something other than it needs to be sent in. Which totally sucks. In the pandemic world, who knows what that process will be like.

I had the same thing happen. I have sent the lens in for repair.

Nikon quotes a price of $576.22 including shipping and tax.

I have had the lens for a little over one year and it has seen only occasional use in studio.

I have not dropped or used the lens in any way that would be considered out side of light use. How it fails is beyond me. But Im extremely unhappy.

I resigned up to Dpreview after years away just to let you know you are not alone in this since no one responded to you.

Wow. Sorry. I am lucky to have this lens less than a year and Nikon is covering repair cost.
But this is really bad thing if you need this lens on Tripod ( especially for video work )

That sound’s suspiciously like a stripped thread on the knob or the collar thread.  Quite possible if you were using a lot of force when it was working.

Quick Update

Nikon fixed this Lens for me free of charge ( They changed Collar Ring Knob. As I said my lens was on guarantee period, so they respect that )
Hopefully this was one time issue

Re: 70 - 200 2.8 S Collar Ring won't Lock

For the record, my 400 2.8 TC came with the same tripod collar ring defect.  I am unsure what to do because to ship it back to them with insurance costs $400, even though it's under warranty.  In addition, I have heard horror stories of them keeping lenses for months to over a year before returning them, and I cannot go that long without it.

Perhaps you can have your dealer order a new part and then either you or the dealer fix it yourselves without having to ship it. I’ve done this with expensive to ship items under warranty, though not Nikon ones.

Funny that in such a time period we hear nothing until someone posts about it ....... then other examples magically appear out of the closet ......

If all they did was change the collar screw knob, then sounds like the screw itself had a sheered thread. Lucky, they didn't have to replace to collar too!

I received mine back as well. They replaced the collar bearings. $250. I’m happy the price came down from the estimate, but I’m nervous about my lens now.
Let’s hope that we don’t have any repeats. Optically I love the lens.

No, I am not and let me make this clear !! ..

When a problem is brought to light it is often blamed on user error , overtightening/ misuse ...... then posts follow that show that it is an issue even if uncommon ....... as here .... read any threads on the 500 PF and the 70-200mm F2.8E and see the defenders of this poorly designed tripod foot.

I have the AF-S 600mm F4E VR FL and although solid, it is too short to balance on a gimbal (D500/ D750) and has no arca swiss mount and I have to use a workaround  arca swiss extension plate ....... and that on a $12,300 lens? ..... while the Tamron A002 G2 tripod foot is perfect at $1,200!

I am not impressed with Nikon's tripod feet !
