You don't indicate what camera you will be using, but I'd suggest Canon's EF 1.4X III instead of the EF 2X III. IQ with either extender will be affected, but less so with the 1.4X III, make up the magnification difference with cropping.

OK - so with a R5 would suggest the mark III Canon if you are prepared to pay the price - but the mark II would likely be as good since this is an older EF lens.   Or the DG - NOT DGX - kenko pros should be good on a used copy budget.   I'd avoid DGX's since these mess with the electronics.

Be prepared for 400mm f/5.6 to be soft - it will need to be stopped down to f/8 for sharpness.

Re: What 2x extender to canon 70-200 2.8 ef

This year I discovered the EF 2x II is much better than the EF 2x, and that the EF 1.4x III is much better than the EF 1.4x.

I have stopped using the Kenko DG 1.4x as much as possible, since it is inferior to even the EF 1.4x.

All tested with the original 300/2.8 L and 5DSR.

ALL teleconverted lenses should be closed one additional stop to maximize sharpness.

My general experience is that a 2x is worthwhile over 1.4x, but even the L zooms don't take all that well with teleconverters.  Maybe start with the 1.4x and cropping like someone else said.

Good general rule with most lenses - although I think the very best are absolutely fine wide open with 1.4X TC even on 32 MP APSC.  However the OP’s proposed combo does need stopping down
