I just discovered that my old and rarely used now EF 24-70 2.8L (Mk 1) won't unzoom below (if it's a proper term) 28mm. It's is a reverse zoom lens if that's how it's called. It is shorter at 70mm and stored that way. It extends going from 70 to 24mm and at about 30mm I can't move the zoom ring anymore, something won't let me. I can zoom back and forth easily but only between 30 and 70mm.
I discovered this while I was outside and it was the only lens I had on my 5D mk3, so I used it in that range and it was fine. Later I started to use it again at home and the first few shots were OK but then the camera started to think that it was really dark setting exposures at 2-3 sec while just before they were 1/60-1/100. Also, a few times sporadically I got a message that the lens lost communication and I need to clean contacts. They were clean.
So, my hunch is that some electrical connector inside got loose and blocks zoom. I purchased this lens new long time ago, never dropped it or anything like this and stored vertically on the mount with cap. I wonder if anyone had a similar experience and how it ended.
I am thinking to send it to Canon but the repair may be expensive. Can anyone recommend me a third party repair center in Canada? There was one in Toronto and I even was there but it was more than a decade ago, I forgot everything about it.
