X100 Pro

It would be awesome if Fuji would start developing a Pro version of the X100 series with the following features

- 18mm f1.4 lens

- New high MP sensor rumoured for the X-H2

- X-Pro body ergonomics and build quality

- NP-W235 battery

- IBIS

- Priced around $2.5k

Would anybody else be interested in such camera? I’d take that over something like a Leica Q2 every time. It’d be the ultimate street/documentary camera.

No i wouldn’t be interested. The X100 series is better off with the small 23mm and is already very successful for Fuji. I would rather just use the X-Pro series. Which I do.  I do agree that I wish the X100 was a little bigger like a Leica M or Q body size.
As far as competition for the Q, it would not be. Different price range and different luxury status. If you want the Q, you will still want it.

You are defining an X-Pro (with IBIS, maybe the Pro4) with the 18mm f2 attached.

A 18mm f1.4 would still be too big for a compact camera. You can always attach the XF 18mm f1.4 to an X-Pro

Cool concept, but that would be a fair bit larger, heavier, and more expensive than the current body, which means an even more niche product, which means a smaller market (in an already shrinking market). No doubt some people would love it, but I'm not sure it makes any business sense for Fuji.

Personally, after shooting the Ricoh GR, Fuji X100, and Leica Q, I kept only the Ricoh because of just how tiny it is. Once you get to the size of the Q, or this theoretical X00 pro, then I'd definitely rather just have an ILC.

I wouldn't. One of the most interesting aspects of the X100 series is the rather compact size combined with all the controls and features you'd find on an X-Pro camera.

A fixed 18mm f1.4 would protrude less from the body as some of it will be hidden within the body as with the X100. With a redesign they would probably make it half the length of the current XF 18mm f1.4.

This would make it Leica Q competitor and I’m pretty sure it would sell well enough for it to be worthwhile.

Whether it would sell well enough to be worth the investment for Fuji (R&D, marketing, etc.) would require some fairly detailed market analysis, but if we're just speculating here, I would bet that a larger, heavier, and much more expensive X100 would sell in meaningfully smaller numbers than the current X100.  Maybe with significant margins that could still make sense for Fuji, but it seems unlikely to me.

Also, from an ROI perspective, you have to consider whether it would mostly be cannibalizing existing X100 sales.  Fuji probably isn't interested in launching a new camera to primarily compete with itself.

And as a practical matter, I don't see this theoretical X100 Pro as a Leica Q2 competitor.  The Q2 is a 47MP full-frame camera with an f/1.7 Leica lens on it.  If someone wants and can afford that camera, then they're going to buy it.  And if they can't afford the Leica, then they're probably already looking at the existing X100 as an alternative, which brings us right back to cannibalizing existing X100 sales.  There may be a small group of folks who can't afford a Q2 and aren't considering the X100V, but who would consider an X100 Pro, but now we're talking about a very small, niche market...

For the next version of the X100V, yes, IBIS for sure. Upgraded AI focusing too.

Gerald Undone mentioned the nice looking organic appearance of the xtrans high ISO noise and raved about how well Resolve cleaned it up while still leaving fine detail. ("like they were made for each other")  If Fuji were to somehow acquire that software and build it into the successor of the X100V, it'd be a dream come true.

Fuji did so well with the X100V, it's hard to think of ways to improve it.  But now that I think about it, a brass shutter button would be a nice addition...

For 2.5k i‘m pretty sure you could get an 18mm 1.4 and an x-pro3…and for the change you could get a tube of superglue to permanently attach both together…

There‘s nothing to make the current x100 less/not pro except maybe complete weather sealing, without the need for the extra kit…

I would be looking at one of those, but possibly not really equipped with a 40Mpx sensor on APS-C. An MF version though ..

The Q2 isn't easy to beat, very clever design choices e.g. long press wheel changes from EV comp to ISO, she has IBIS and works best when light and weather is dull, rain in a forest, moss on trees and you want to print large. No idea how they do that, maybe that 50Mpx senor (47.5 after cropping, which you don't have to do) or maybe the fine tuning of colours or the lens?

A large sensor could be interesting, otherwise an X-Pro3 plus lens isn't actually that large or heavy.

But 2.5k APS-C?

Dunno.

What advantage would it have over the Q2? It would be half a stop behind the Q2 in terms of light gathering and depth of field, ”X-Pro build quality” is behind the IP-rated Q2, the rumoured new sensor is (as I recall) still of lower resolution than the Q2…

OK, there’s the price… but if price is the sole reason to take something over a Q2 every time, then you might as well argue in favour of a Canon P&S 😉

As someone else noted, if as a camera manufacturer you’re going to make something that’s like a Q2 but not quite as good as a Q2, yet still more expensive than pretty much any other fixed lens camera, then you’re looking at a vanishingly small market—especially when much of that market is served by one or two of your own cameras.

Possible improvement for X100VI :

  • 40MP BSI-CMOS X-Trans sensor
  • X-Processor 5
  • Subject based AF algorithm which implemented in X-H2s
  • Weak 4-stops IBIS (similar to Ricoh GRIII)
  • Physical level which indicate SS dials as actual SS or min SS.

Physical level locate beside SS dials

  • Full weather sealing body (learn from XF 27mm F2.8 R WR)
  • 15 fps leaf-shutter
  • Native support HEIF
  • Native support Fujifilm Instax Mini Link 2 printer via Bluetooth.
  • Single UHS-II card slot

Nice to have improvement

  • Larger hybrid OVF with 24mm eye-point, with notch corner rear LCD screen
  • Built-in Electronic variable ND filter (1/4 to 1/128) - optical based via transparent monochrome LCD panel + polarizing filter. Auto ND mode will proactively adjust the filter density to find the best exposure level for shooting.

  • Silent lens ring
  • Better menu UI (similar to BMPCC4K)

Image quality between the XF 18mm f1.4 and the 28mm “Summilux” is indiscernible. Check out the comparison done by Samuel Streetlife on YouTube. He did a blind comparison of the same scene and the majority actually preferred the Fuji.

And yes, half the price would be a huge advantage and a big reason for me buying one, especially if it performs on par with the Q2 in IQ. I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable daily carrying a $5k camera.

Re: X100 Pro

Nope

- "Pro" for me means FF

- Beauty of x100* design is flat "almost pancake" lens. Imagine 18/1.4 size

- No needs for IBIS

- No real needs for extra megapixels

- Finally, the price. If over $2K, I'd better collect for Q3

Samuel Streetlife has a few controversial videos if I remember right. I would still prefer having some files on my computer to look at.

A few years ago there was a post on Luminous Landscape or ImageResource can't rememebr which one where they had compared a Hasselblad with a Canon Point & Shoot.

Some preferred the P&S needless to say ... (could not ask you what results you want and I could doctor a "blind-test" around it

Not sure what this has to do with anything.  Your example has absolutely nothing to do with this question.   If you have nothing relevant to offer here, how about just staying out of the discussion.

I would be interested in an “XL100” the size of the X-Pro with a medium format sensor and a 18-35mm (full-frame eq) f2 lens.
My other wish is an X-Pro5 with IBIS and the same minimalistic back and no grip as the X-E4.

If we talking about APS-C cameras, anything more than $1500 is more than I would be willing to spend on any body.

Fuji found a niche with the X-100 series and developed it over the years up to (so far) the X-100V, which in my view is beauty and function combined to achieve excellence.
Leica have achieved a similar level of excellence with the Q series.
If research shows there to be a market for an X100V wide version with an 18mm lens, then Fuji should make it without changing anything else at all. Just like Ricoh with their GR3 and GR3x. (I cannot see Fuji doing this. 28mm equivalent and 35mm equivalent are too close).
Some GFX lovers have a GFX100 on their wish list. Whilst I doubt it will ever be produced, (because it will be too big and expensive for a fixed lens camera), I think it will make more sense than an upsized APSC X100 with a PRO tag added.
