Recommendations for a good, not so expensive ND filter?

Good afternoon guys,

After some deliberation finally bought an EF 20mm f2.8 that I plan to use in Turkey in a few weeks, mainly to capture some landscapes in Cappadocia. Just wondering if you could recommend a decent ND filter for it. I don't think will see too much use after that, so I am looking to spend 75 bucks or less.

Thank you!

Watch B&H sales. I’ve seen Tiffen VND’s in your price range. You could also consider Hoya, or look for a good used one.

What are you planning to use it for? I ask because square filters are better for some applications.

I am planning to use it for slow-shutter water and landscape shots. The recommendation of the variable ND K&F is a very good option, I can use it as my lens protector too.

time and time it has been proven that lens hood is a better lens protector than a filter, IMO.

Why not use both?

i used to be under this false understanding and then realized when you put another piece of glass in front of your good quality lens, it changes the IQ of your lens - even if it by a small amount. canon or other manufacturers (as far as i know) have never suggested this idea for lens protection. glass may protect the lens from the sand blast if you go to the beach on a windy day, as far as i can think of, but that would be it, IMHO.

but on the other hand, if your lens is about to hit a wall or something like that, the lens hood can takes the brunt of the impact much better than a glass in front of your lens, in my experience.

good luck.

You could argue for a plain protector, but a variable ND introduces both light loss and polarization. Don't leave it on unless you want that.

I use K&F square ND filters.  I’m quite happy with them.  Mine do have a slight blue cast to them.  It is very even, but the color is there.   Very correctable if you shoot raw.  I generally start with an unfiltered shot, then add the ND.  I use the unfiltered as a guide to remove the color cast using a white balance adjustment in post.

I can’t speak to the variable ND’s however.
