Spray paint for vintage camera

I’m looking to repaint an old camera. The existing body is painted black, but it has scratches and chips.  I plan to sand those areas then repaint the entire piece.

What type of spray paint is appropriate for this job?

i personally would avoid to spray, i d only spray if the parts are fully disassembled and masked.

thats a link to a german camera repair tool shop, but the goods are US, so you should be able to easily find it in the US.

Thanks for the link.  They have lacquer sticks, which will come in handy for the engraved portions.

Yes, the parts are disassembled and masked.  Chips have been patched and sanded with resin-based filler.  I’m just not sure what kind of paint to use. Lacquer, acrylic enamel, epoxy, etc,.

You mean like a Cerakote? The problem is I don’t own a sprayer.  Does such a paint come in an aerosol can?

you can get 2K in aerosol cans, they come with a activator.

Air brush, other options

Additionally, unless the old paint has been completely removed, I would be worried about building-up thickness so some parts might no longer fit. Of course, you really have no option other than painting if you want a new custom color.

The general rule for paint is multiple thin coats, sometimes with the last one(s) being a clear coat. This is why lacquers were popular: they can be very thin coats. Air brush application can be used very effectively for some thin paints.

That is far less risky. I've very successfully used Birchwood Casey products , namely Aluminum Black, to blacken raw spots in aluminum parts of lenses. It also can give an anodized-like finish on raw aluminum parts, such as pinholes drilled in sanded aluminum from a soda can.

I'm convinced that 2K is the way to go.  Have you used the less toxic version (free from isocyanates)?

Once you get the paint selected, be sure to match the black, at least to warm or cool. Get the black wrong and the camera will look repainted, get it right and the camera will look refreshed
