What would you pick as a second camera? - X-T4 main, X100V, Ricoh GR III

Hi all,

I used to only have the X100V and a Ricoh GRIII which kinda serves the purpose of being compact for my urban photography.

Just for context, 100% hobby and this is most definitely a case of GAS, as I enjoy technology and using various systems for my photography. I used to shoot with the Sony A7RIII with the 17-28mm 2.8, 28-200mm and having the X100V + Ricoh GRIII as a backup. I moved away from Sony to focus on the Fuji as it always felt the best.

I recently found a really great deal on a used X-T4 + 16-55mm 2.8 for 1700 Euros totally and was too good to pass on, and it's really great replacement for the Sony that I used to have, especailly with the video features and flipscreen.

I want to keep the X-T4 + 16-55mm 2.8 as Fuji is where I want to stay, the question is whether to keep the X100V or the Ricoh GRIII as I can't justify having all three systems at this point.

X-T4 + X100V I would stay in Fujiland, but I lose out on the super compact part, however my photos will have the same look between cameras.

X-T4 + Ricoh, I could get a 23mm F2 to match the X100V focal range if needed and use the Ricoh when I need something super portable

The question boils down to this:

Would you pick the X100V or the Ricoh GRIII as a second body to the X-T4?

I do admit that this is very gear and I should probably go out and shoot more than overthink things.

Have you heard about the dust problem? It's kind of an expensive dust sucker. One of the reasons I have never considered getting a Ricoh.

Doesn't really matter what i or anyone else on this forums thinks, theres no right or wrong, do what you think is best.

But seeing as you asked.

I'll keep a GR camera no matter if im shooting sony or fuji which i do.

The GR's are a joy for spontaneous candid's and pocketability with high image quality and the ibis is icing on the cake for my indoor discreet photography.

Yeah I had my worries as well when I purchased it, but so far I have not experienced anything (let's hope it stays like this).

But it's definitely a point towards keeping the X100V as a more reliable and dust free backup.

Enjoy your X-T4 and use it to the fullest. Then if you find something it cannot do, look to another camera. Don't fall into the G.A.S.

Yes, that's a good solution.

I've owned three different versions of the X100.  I now have a GRIII.  If either one was going to be my only camera, it'd 100% be the X100.  But it's not my only camera.

Up to a few months ago, I used a Nikon Z.  Now I have a GSX.  And the GRIII.

Normally, the GRIII stays in the car.  Three instances when I'll use the GRIIII:

1. I have a telephoto on the GSX and don't want to switch lenses.  I'll bring the GRIII as my wide angle camera.

2. I'm shooting somewhere that I want to be as discreet as possible.

3. I'm out with a civilian (aka non photographer) and don't want to force my photo tendencies on them.

I think either camera can handle number 1 equally as well.  Number 2 and 3 are better served with the GRIII.  While the X100 is small, it can't fit in a lot of jacket pockets let alone pants pockets.  And by using the LCD with one handed operation, it's just as fast as a phone.  With a lot better results.

Personally, I don’t see anything wrong with keeping a second camera from a different system. I’ve heard others refer to it as a “palette cleanser” camera. Just something fun to keep around when you want a change, or get inspired.

I’ve been thinking about picking up a used Canon M100 just for kicks. Maybe with the 22mm. I know it’s a dying system, but that’s not the point. The point is to take it out and snap away.

If you already have 'em, they are both paid for, and you don't need the money from a sale, then the easiest option is to just keep em all. You don't have to justify your number of cameras or your number of systems to anybody.

I shoot a number of cameras across three systems and am seriously considering adding a fourth. If you like variety, enjoy variety.

The yardcoyote is a bad influence.

I have an X-T4 and love it.
My second camera is an iPhone.

: )

Keep them both for awhile and see which one you end up preferring.  Sell the one you don’t use.

Yes, nothing wrong with it at all and in fact i would say it opens your eyes to the differences and similarity's of cameras and the images they can produce and what you really want out of a camera.

The GR has two trump cards: its pocketability and its ability to shoot covertly from the hip. If either of those matter to you then the GR is a compelling option. The dust issue is real, but the process of gaining access to the sensor and cleaning it is actually quite straightforward—it’s an order of magnitude easier than most fixed lens cameras. (At least, that was true of my GR mk 1.)

Other than those key benefits, I prefer the X100V personally, but I wouldn’t want to be without a GR-style camera for street hip shots. I still have my GR Digital II and an XF10.

If that’s something that you have a continued use for, but you want to reclaim some cash, then maybe one compromise is to sell the GR and pick up one of the small-sensor GR Digitals. That should allow you to recoup 60-70% of the value of the GR, but still keep something similar. There are those who prefer the small sensors for street, anyway…

Then again, another compromise would be to trade the X100V for an X100S or similar; again you’d recover 60-70% of the value but still have something that performed the same role.

Very much as I would reply except it would be for the GRiiix as I personally don't bond well with the 28mm FF equivalent focal length well.

Wow, lots of great responses won’t be able to quote all of them.

Definitely got some thinking going on for this discussion.

Basically to sum some of the replies up, the reason why i’m selling instead of keeping is somewhat financially but also to slim down on the amount of gear I laying around.

There are overwhelmingly a lot of replies in favour of the GR due to it’s simplicity, pocketability and how carefree it is to bring around. Honestly the times I have brought my GR on a business trip over the X100V has also been because of its size.

What LeonD said regarding “if I only had 1 camera”, then X100V would be the one, but since I have my X-T4 as backup it make a great deal of sense with the GR.

Still confused but things are starting to make more sense for me now like keeping the GRIII and the X-T4 + potentially a smaller lens.

Will be sad to part ways with the X100V though, really great camera.

I know this is a lot of rambling about gear, but really appreciate to have you guys pick my brain

Oddly enough I find myself in a related quandary. Today I picked up an X-Pro2, and given that I also have an X-E3, my X100V now starts to look a little marginalised. It does almost everything very slightly better than the other two, but its sole remaining unique feature (excluding things that don’t matter to me) is the silent shutter. So on the one hand it’s a near-perfect camera; on the other, it’s kind of redundant and I could trade that and the wide and tele converters for quite a large pile of used lenses… 😬

The GR3 is the best camera purchase I have ever made.

I was worried about dust and all that other crap too. I take it everywhere, mountain biking, dinner, fairs, etc etc.

If it gets some dust in it, and I can notice it, I will get it cleaned once a year. HAsn't happened yet and its always in gnraly conditions. I keep it in a sunlgass bag that doesn't add any bulk.

The fuji is small but you can't take it with you always. You just can't. The Ricoh is smaller than my phone and has superb image quality. The Fuji is great and cool, but the Ricoh is every bit as good for most things. If just one or two times you don't take the fuji due to its size but would have taken the Ricoh, you picked the wrong camera.

I wouldn't have captured anything of the below if I didn't take the gr3 on my last trip. Bonus if you know the bar in the B&W picture

Honesty both cameras are rad. My choice is with the XT4, Ricoh 100 out of 100 times. Cheers!!!

You start with 3 cameras and sell one because it was too much.

Then you buy another camera and end up where you started.

Given that all 3 cameras are excellent, you need to go out and shoot more. Then decide.
