RF 85mm f2: Suitable as a high-quality portrait lens for the R5?

I'm looking for a portrait-suited lens as my third lens for my R5; I currently own the 24-105 f4L and the 16mm STM. Obviously, headshots and head and shoulders portraits are not adequately covered by my setup.

While I'd love to get the RF 70-200mm f/2.8L (or the 85mm f/1.2L), unfortunately it's just out of my budget for now.

What I can afford is the 85mm f/2, or the 100mm f/2.8L. It seems like the former is a better choice as it won't be made redundant if/when I upgrade to the big white; but the 100mm f/2.8L seems to perform better optically.

Will I regret getting the 85mm f2? What would you do if you were in my situation?

Why not buy a used EF 135mm f2.0 L with adapter.

I dunno -- 105mm f/4, assuming you have the room, and you can capture the background you want, can do nicely.

Ditto.

In terms of resolution, the 85 / 2 seems to be the sharper of the two in the center, and typically, for portraits, the central region of the photo is where you need the sharpness. It also offers you an extra stop. That said, I'm not saying it's "better than" the RF 100 / 2.8L -- just that I wouldn't choose the macro over it for portraits.

Myself, I'd get it ('cause I did). It's small, light, and inexpensive compared to the alternatives, and takes fine portraits (all photos below taken with an R + RF 85 / 2 macro IS at f/2):

I also use it for hockey pics:

But, sure, I'd take the RF 85 / 1.2L or RF 70-200 / 2.8L IS instead, if anyone's feeling charitable. I'm just saying that it's decent if you're in need of a faster lens in that focal and aperture range.

I thought the EF 100mm L was a great lens and it seems like the RF 100mm L is even better. I'd go for the 100mm since you can get 1.5:1 magnification and although you probably won't be getting that close for portraits, it's nice knowing that you can if you needed to do something like a ring shot for an engagement shoot, etc...

The RF 100mm L also has dual nano USM motors and AF will be better. The only downside is that you have to be a little further away from the subject and on that end, I do like 85mm more.

i'd consider EF 85 f1.8, it is sharp and performs real well for portrait. price is real reasonable and you can pick one up for $350 as a second hand lens. just an idea.

As a long time user of 85/1.8 I would not recommend it if OP is considering RF 85/2 or EF 100/2.8. Both lenses (as well as all other current 85mm RF/EF mount lenses) are noticeably better optically.

To my taste f/2.8 is already quite slow for portraits. Headshots with a distant background will be ok but for half body / full body shots the separation given by f/2 or faster lens will be more pleasing.

RF 85/2 is a great lens with one flaw - slow AF. The second hockey shot above shows it clearly being focused on the rear leg instead of head most probably because the AF motor did not keep the pace with rapidly approaching player.

So if OP plans more static scenes, 85/2 will deliver perfectly.

EF 85/1.4 or Sigma 85/1.4 are also worth to consider.
