What’s happening to the G5X II?

Sorry if this has already been asked, but it seems to me that this camera is quietly disappearing from some retailers’ shelves with no sign of returning. What’s up?

Yeah, I get a sense the general supply chain issues affecting things is forcing companies to focus on specific products only.  There are quite a few models that are not available/on backorder.  Will probably be like this for a little while to come.

Been in the news for awhile on the chip shortages affecting affecting the production of everything that uses chips; from electronic devices to cars.

Also some articles that camera mfgs are favoring the larger sensor ILC's and APS-C/ FF mirrorless (DSLR) bodies.

Yeah but the G5x? That's not a low end model is it... I'd really be interested in a successor for my Rx100, with a better EVF and AF system than the G5x II... In other words, a G5x III.

But there has been absolute silence in the 1 inch market since 2019... No rumors no nothing.

Not even Sony has announced something, and they used to releasedl new Rx100 versions like clockwork, every year...

Pity.

I had one on backorder at Adorama for a month or so, with no indication of an expected ship date. I didn’t have much hope that I would be getting it any time soon given the current supply chain issues. But, a couple of weeks ago I happened to see that it was (briefly) in stock on Canon’s website, so I ended up snagging one there. Not sure if this was just some old stock that they found or if they’re actually getting some new ones in… but it may be worth keeping an eye on their site to see if any more become available.

Yeah I think the combined pandemic/supply chain issues just disrupted the clockwork of things in general with these items.

Like mentioned, Sony used to release one like every year.

I've been personally waiting for a G1X Mark IV.  The Mark III and the G5X Mark II seem to have been out of stock for some time now.  Hopefully they can get back on a cadence soon.

It's 3 year old compact. Is it still even in production? Selling for $900 on eBay... Yikes

Unfortunately it is compared to current production priority of APS-C/ FF mirrorless cameras—e.g., recently released Canon "R" bodies and "RF" lenses.

As posted in my previous post:
"Canon says the camera market has 'largely bottomed out,' expects pro and 'advanced amateur' segments to grow"

"... In other words, entry-level cameras will be taking a backseat to higher-end models, which also have the added benefit of typically providing higher profit margins. ..."
(bold emphasis added by me)

IMO all the camera mfgs want to remain competitive, and not fall behind in these type of cameras; even Panasonic a die-hard four-thirds system is now making FF cameras.

... I'd really be interested in a successor for my Rx100, with a better EVF and AF system than the G5x II... In other words, a G5x III. ...

Be a long wait, if ever. Probably be quicker/ better off saving up for a RX100 VA, or RX100 VII.

... Not even Sony has announced something, and they used to releasedl new Rx100 versions like clockwork, every year...

Past several years not really:
DPR Sony Product Timeline

... Pity.

Agree.

Need to keep in mind the majority of cameras, chips, etc. are made in China where Covid-19 pandemic has and still is hampering production/ shipping.

you could buy a mint used Mk5 for what you can sell a G5X Mk2 for - Prob is that they have the same annoying viewfinder and you`re trading optical compromises , the G5X-II lens gets better and better as you zoom so is fantastic from 35mm onwards even wideopen whereas the Sony Mk5 lens is superb at 24mm and gets worse as you zoom . the AF on the Mk5a is indeed good but probably not got the reach to make use of it ...... the Mk7`s lens is too slow IMO , you`ll need to crank the ISO to get the shutter speed up ..

I don`t know why Canon couldn`t do fast AF in the G5X-II sensor - its the same BSI-Stacked device as the Mk5A but without the PDAF pixels being mapped in , guess by that stage they didn`t take the powershot series seriously enough to be bothered .

Are you 100% sure it is the "same" sensor as in the Mk5A?

I would would tend to doubt Sony would sell the same sensor used in the Mk5A, RX100 VII, or RX10 IV to justify Sony's prices for these cameras.

It`s 1" , stacked and BSI so I doubt it`s anything else , not viable to tool up for a different sensor just for two canon cameras ..

Sony justify the price of their cams based on that they continue to sell at those prices -----  remember also that the G5X Mk2 is £850 that`s £150 more than a VA and the same price as a Mk6 !!! ...

Not just for Canon, but any 'other' camera mfg. that wants the "stacked and BSI" sensor.

Sony image sensor division is now a separate company; hence logical the new sensor company would want to cater to the needs of other camera mfgs sensor to increase sales.

Since Sony Semiconductor Solutions designed/ Mfg. the sensor they could design/ make a sensor to be able to not provide some of the higher end features without having to "retool".

I would assume it is a older "version" of 20MP 1"-type stacked BSI-CMOS sensor; e.g.
used in the RX100 V, RX10 III; rather than sensors being used the RX100 VA / VII, or RX10 IV.

Unless technical specs prove otherwise (not speculation) I highly doubt Sony Semiconductor Solutions would sell the "same" sensor made for Sony cameras to other camera mfgs' to keep their competitive edge/ advantage.

As a prospective buyer of the G5 X II (and not a prior Canon user) I am surprised by the difficulty to find these cameras, as well as its price. I am looking for something to replace my Panasonic GM5 that is falling apart (thumb dial stopped working, and power lever feels like it will be next). But $900 for this camera seems excessive. One could get a Panasonic G100 for hundreds less, and get much more camera. But I really want a camera with a viewfinder that is as small as possible. The G100 is just not as small enough. The Sony's seem like computers and not cameras, and I feel like they are not well made (all Sony's really seem delicate). I'd love a Ricoh GR with VF, but I am never gonna get it. The handling of the G5 X seems better than the other 1-inchers, and I love the close-focusing at zoom. Those things have me intrigued. But getting a hold of one is surprisingly difficult. A sort-of nearby Best Bye <wink> has a discounted open box one, per their website. Yet despite calling and emailing BB will not get back to me.

It's a strange world we live in these days.

I previously owned this camera. It’s fantastic as a travel compact. So many features and technology crammed into such a small package. And fun to shoot. Here's a few shots that show what's possible.

Blackhawk museum

Highspeed frames overlaid in editor. Used the pre-shot function.

Fairy house for a bit of fantasy photography. Heavily edited, of course.

SOOC using the built-in star trail function.

Storm on Lake Huron

Blackhawk museum. Low light but performs beautifully

My special friend

Our hometown clock.

I’m having a bit of seller’s remorse, and was shocked to find all the bare shelves. It’s always been $900 MSRP, so no surprise there. If you want it and can find one, I’d snap it up.

As already posted the current chip shortages, production issues in China, etc. are causing shortages for "LOT" of cameras.

.... as well as its price. ...

Have you looked at the prices for other comparable enthusiast 1"-Type sensor compacts?

The 'older' Sony RX100 III selling around US$748.00. The current Sony RX100 VA selling around US$998.00. Both Sonys only have a 24-70mm EFL lens.

... One could get a Panasonic G100 for hundreds less, ...

With a f/1.8-2.8 24-120mm (35mm Equivalent) lens?

To me the Canon G3 X when first released was 'way' overprice (no built-in finder; slow lens max apertures; no lens filter threads to attach filters/ no lens hood -- had to buy the "optional" filter/ hood adapter) compared to the FZ1000—hence though being long time Canon film/ digital user a got the FZ1000.

And why I bought the Panasonic ZS100 instead of the G7 (no built-EVF).

To each his/ her own preferences and budget.

Awesome shots!!! These shots really make me more inclined towards the G5X II than the G7X II / III. The effect of that 120mm really shows.
