RF 24-105mm f/4 some kind of blur on fast exposure

Hi all,

I shoot with R5 and RF 24-105 f/4 L and RF 70-200 f/4 L.

I noticed that on regular to fast shutter on the RF 24-105 f/4 the image gets slightly blurry.

It happens on 1/60 or faster shutter. So it is not about shaking the camera.

I have the IBIS and lens IS on.

The most interesting observation is, that when I shoot same thing on 1/10, or even 1/3 shutter which is slower and should has more chance to get more blurry, the image is more sharp than on a much faster shutter like 1/60 or even faster than that.

If you believe me that I hold the camera very still, the most logical option that comes to my mind is the lens IS has an issue?!

From my analysis, I don't observe same image blurriness on my RF 70-200 f/4 shots. This hints me to the fact that the IBIS is fine. Otherwise I'd see it regardless which lens I use.

Then I thought maybe the RAW processing of Lightroom Classic is wrong. I opened it in Canon DPP. Same result.

Those of you who own R5 and RF 24-105 f/4, do have such issue too? are you familiar with such? have you heard about it somewhere? If you had it, how did you fix it?

Please notice the issue:

Which shutter mode are you shooting?  If you're shooting EFCS or Mechanical, it could very likely be shutter shock.  Try the same shots with the electronic shutter and see if it still happens.

Are you accounting for subject motion? I doesn’t take much of a breeze to make foliage blurry.

EFCS in single shot mode won’t exhibit shutter shock.

Re: RF 24-105mm f/4 some kind of blur on fast exposure

I shoot mechanical shutter.

I understood the electronic shutter has a "morphing" effect on fast moving objects. That is why I stay with the mechanical.

I'd say that your suggestion might be very logical, but the fact I don't see the same blur with RF 70-200, still locks my thinking it is the lens.

But, I'll try indeed the electronic shutter.

Thank you.

I fully understand what you're saying. trees indeed may move in the wind.

But it happens also for still objects like rocks.

So indeed my example is debatable. But believe me that the same effect is observed on fully still objects.

The reports of "shutter shock" are that they don't happen with every lens, and almost always at speeds at 1/250 and lower.  I personally haven't seen it on my R7 but I also usually shoot at higher speeds as I shoot wildlife.

People who have complained about shutter shock with EFCS say it happens on some lenses at relatively low shutter speeds (~1/200 or less) and when shooting at the fastest rate (15 fps). I don't see a problem at lower rates.

Re: RF 24-105mm f/4 some kind of blur on fast exposure

I experience the issue shooting mechanical.

I say I only will try the EFCS.

I notice it at 1/60 and faster.

It might help if you explained in more detail what you are trying to do. Are you sure you are getting focus where you want it? Why are you using servo AF?

Re: RF 24-105mm f/4 some kind of blur on fast exposure

I'm not trying to do any special thing. Just regular photography. No effects. No intentional motion while shooting etc...

I do have focus. You may see in the blurred image, that the blur is motion blur (I believe it is IS issue, some claim it is the shutter shock) and not out-of-focus blur.

I use Servo AF because it suits for all. Both static shooting and dynamic/tracking shooting.

Again, per what it looks to me, there is no issue what so ever of focus. It looks to me as a motion blur.
