* The Weekly Image Thread 22 07 29 #705 *

Welcome to the Weekly Image Thread!

This thread will appear every Saturday (GMT) and is open for submissions and discussions about images and processing techniques until the next Saturday, or the new thread is started. If the thread is nearing full before the next Saturday, I may start a new thread and carry on until it fills or the next Saturday arrives and it is reasonably full in which case I will start another. Confused, so am I! From time to time the start could be delayed if I am unavailable.

Although this Weekly thread is in the Olympus SLR forum, we openly welcome users of all brands and models.

Please:

  1. Reply to this post and change the TITLE!
  2. Please reply to at least one other contribution, your replies encourage posters!!!
  3. If asked, please share your processing techniques or technical details.
  4. Please show the EXIF if possible. Please identify the lens used regardless of which camera was used to take the image. This helps people form opinions of the lens used with the body to possibly influence future acquisitions.
  5. If special lighting was used to create your image stating what was done may help others.

Thanks for joining and contributing this week.

Boats

The previous thread is not full but it is now Saturday, GMT so I will start the new thread tonight.

Taken from the viewing platform at the end of the tunnel.

Andrew

This is one of the boats that leaves from the Canadian side.

This boat is one of the Maid of the Mist boats that leaves from the U.S. side.

a lot of mist in the air blocking the view of the falls behind. Also, ugly brown foam in the foreground!

Jesus! There's a sh*tload of people on that boat! Did you go on it too? The fall looks great - as it should.

Re: Boats

No to the boats Charlotte. The Falls area was busy with people but likely only about half or less than precovid. We avoided the falls area and only went to the new attraction. It was not very crowded and we stayed away from most people and wore masks. We left after visiting the new exhibit.
We have never been on one of those boats

Re: Boats

I assume from the uniformity of colourful clothing worn by those on the boats that waterproofs are provided Andrew. Bit too crowded for me.

Re: Boats

You got a great day for pictures, Andrew.  Great sky and nice light.  I like the amount of green in the water.  It is a beautiful place and likely good for hydration.  Rich

Great set Andrew the first image for me but how do they get away with that many people on the top deck not only covid but health and safety reasons there packed it like sardines

Re: Boats

Wow, brave souls!

PS.

I see from your gear (last entry is E-510) that maybe you could use a telephoto lens higher than 100mm, so we can see the boat and people in it closer. Or FF and enlarge, or... When is your birthday? - so you can treat yourself.

Re: Boats --- One Closer of the boat and tourists

I have not updated my gear list in a very long time Chris.  I have a 4/3 50 - 200, 40 - 150 f/2.8, and a 100 - 400.  I did not take anything longer than the 12 - 100.  The closest shot I have of the boat is below.  It is still not close to the 100 mm available being shot at 57 mm!  I find the boat not all that interesting.  To me it is about the boat in its environment.

Glen Strae

Glen Strae is only around 20 miles from home and a place I visit several times a year. It's quiet and scenic.

I walked up the glen yesterday. It was a day of fast moving clouds and constantly changing light. Started out well.

Walked past the duck pond which was completely absent of ducks.

There's a herd of Highland cattle in the glen. These are a couple of youngsters.

Cloud shadows were sweeping across the landscape.

The glen opens out after a few miles and I walked down to the river.

The sky would darken occasionally.

I met this little guy on the way back.

A last look up the glen before reaching the car.

Re: Boats

Red coats for the Canadian side Dave, and yes, supplied by the company. (You have to wonder if the Red Coats were chosen for an historical reason!)  The U.S. boats supply a different colour slicker!  Formerly these boats were called Horatio Hornblower. That logo is still visible in small print in places on the boats.

Re: Boats

Thanks Rich.  We likely managed to maintain 'physical distancing' for almost all of the visit to the power station.  We did not go elsewhere because of the crowding and extremely few were wearing masks.  I guess it is over now!  The neighbour down the road has round two and round one was not good for her!  This time just 'sniffles' so far.

Re: Boats

I have no idea Paul.  As far back as I can recall, it has always been so.  I think we only saw a half dozen people with masks there including the hoards walking along the sidewalk on Falls Avenue that goes along the river between the American Falls and the Horseshoe Falls.  All covid protocols are out the window here except in medical facilities and a few stores that don't get a lot of traffic and are privately owned and operated.  Some employees still where masks but few customers do now other than in those stores that require masks.

Re: Gone fishing...

That is a cool image Chris. Indeed it looks like they all have flown the coup!

That said, I have grown to dislike the Canadian flag thanks to a bunch of inconsiderate 'cults' that use it to signify the fact that they have drunk the kool-aid.  Groups with no social conscience.  Social media is for the most part anti-social!  This group excepted of course.

Re: Glen Strae

A very nice set Dave.  Love those highland cattle!  I see someone out and about in an ATV with their dog as companion.  It will not get any exercise that way!

It looks like you managed to stay dry and the images benefit from the varied lighting.

Re: Glen Strae

Thanks Andrew. The guy on the ATV worked on the estate. He had 2 sheepdogs and his 1 year old daughter with him on the ATV. He stopped for a chat. Nice fellow.

Thank you. I just wondered if people on board were afraid or in awe of the Falls. It would have been interesting if we have seen their faces. This is, after all, one of the nature's wonders being the most powerful water falls in the world.
