Walk in canyon Sunday
2

First view

I have never ventured to this viewing spot before even though often a daily walk in area for me. Access little tricky but felt worth the effort. Trying to escape our heat wave this morning. Handheld with Tamron 28-200 trying different apertures, shutter speeds and settings. Too precarious to ever attempt again with a tripod so just in camera stabilization as lens has none.

Slower Shutter speed

Butterflies and a Firefly

A one stop shop butterfly house in the area yielded these today. It was 485 degrees in there. I almost died. Fortunately, someone was forward thinking enough ($) to place an ice cream and malt shop in the same parking area. Anyway, without further ado...

A very nice set, Glenn. I like the story the first three tell about the Grebe family, but I think my favorite image is the last one.

Thanks - that RoadRunner shot was one of my favorites... Just before it was rapidly circling a bush - so fast it was just a blur.

I realized that I could have taken a video - but was completely ignorant of video configuration on my A1 - so this afternoon I started experimenting. Next time I'll be prepared

Re: More Lightning

Lightning is tricky to capture without a lightning trigger, well done. How do you find the 14mm 1.8?

Looks like a lovely spot! The Tamron is perfect for this type of thing.

Nice - reminds me of a place or two in South-East Asia, monsoon fog about to lift.

Love the image.  Welcome to full frame, and the forum.  I really my enjoyed MFT setup, but found the change to full frame to be very worth while.  Have fun : )

Re: Walk in canyon Sunday

What a beautiful spot, and worth the walk for sure.  My only suggestion would be to possibly try changing your color balance a bit, as they certainly seem bluish/cyan (which is typical for heavy shade), and a bit of warming up might just help them pop, but again, quite lovely just as they are.

Thanks! It is, rather predictably, a favourite motif for local photogs. The sun rises directly behind the spires, making for some lovely light on a cloudless morning.

Thanks, I was pleasantly surprised with the results. The next time I go I will wear less clothes. It was oppressively hot, which was a big distraction for me. I'd like to try it with a little lower iso and a little more depth of field, but that will take some controlled breathing in that heat to get a good steady shot. Normally that's not an issue, but I have COPD and I lost my upper left lung lobe to lung cancer a few years back, so my breathing is a little compromised. Thanks again though, I'm glad you liked it.

Fantastic shot capturing the vivid sea green on a foggy day. I hear the waves crashing ashore.

Derek  - The color is just amazing  - the image is mesmerizing and captivating.  California coast line at its best. Now I’ll have to go through all my old images. I may have missed some good ones - but probably nothing as close to the quality of this image. Congratulations .

Thanks Derek, Post is an area I am still figuring out .  One area i have not adjusted very often was temperature.  An original concept in a book on landscape suggested setting WB to cloudy day not sun ball to give warmer images and recently I just set my WB back to sun on bluebird day.  Something I might switch back to.  Learning as I go so hope I have made them pop a bit more.

The 2nd attempt of the first image has much better color balance, but is still a bit dark for my taste.  The "Second version #2" is just about perfect as far as I'm concerned, with excellent color balance and just the right amount of pop.  Man, what difference that made!

One of the things I like about shooting in RAW is the ease of adjusting the color balance in POST, but for the most part, but when I have the time, I try to use a small gray card I carry with me and set the white balance in-camera when I change locations, which makes post processing even quicker and easier.  Yes, it takes a few moments to do this, but it's well worth the effort to learn how, and actually is not hard at all once you've done it a few times.  Here is the little gray card I use:

Pocket Gray Card

There are others available for half the price that will easily do the job, but I've found this one to be very accurate and durable, and just the right size.

And if you're in a hurry while shooting, you simply take a quick photo of the gray card and use that in post processing to set the WB for a group of photos shot under that same light (as long as you're NOT using AWB in camera)

In any case, I think you did an excellent job with you adjustments. Have fun : )

Some insects with 24-105 mm

Was traveling the days with light photo luggage to see how far the heather blossom is near us. At 25 degrees Celsius I only had A1 and  the FE 24-105 mm G lens with me.

All pictures taken with flash (Neewer NW880S) in HSS-mode.
