R5 Firmware Version 1.6.0 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:

  1. Adds [Auto Power Off Temp.: Standard/High] to the menu for movie recording. When [High] is selected, the camera will not automatically turn off when the temperature of the camera body and card become high, which may allow for longer movie recording than before, depending on the shooting conditions. Note that the temperature of the bottom surface of the camera may increase at this time.
  2. Adds the ability to convert multiple HEIF images into multiple JPEG images.
  3. Enhances the performance of “Movie Digital IS”. It stabilizes the image when taking selfies or walking shots using a wide-angle lens.
  4. Fixes minor issues.

R3 Firmware Version 1.2.0 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:

  1. Adds the ability to set “Custom high speed continuous” to the Drive mode. It is possible to shoot from 2 to 50 images continuously at a speed of approximately 30 to 195 fps.
  2. Adds the ability to select “FHD 239.76 fps/200.00 fps” in “High frame rate.”
  3. Adds the ability for in camera “Depth compositing” during “Focus bracketing.”
  4. Adds Focus bracketing and depth compositing with a flash (Speedlite EL-1).
  5. Adds the ability of time-lapse movie recording. Note that the time-lapse movie setting is retained even if the camera enters the Auto Power Off state before starting time-lapse movie recording.
  6. Adds the ability of Cloud RAW processing functionality. RAW processing with the latest image processing technology is possible. This is a paid service that requires the purchase of a Canon Imaging App Service Plan, which will be available starting July 25, 2022.
  7. Adds the ability to convert multiple HEIF images into multiple JPEG images..
  8. Adds the ability to set [Still Image Crop/Aspect] to [Custom Controls]. The assigned button can be used to switch between crop and aspect ratio.
  9. Adds the ability to crop and resize images during transfer to an FTP server.
  10. 802.1X authentication/WPA2-Enterprise now supports the PKCS#12 certificate format.
  11. Adds an electronic shutter sound to be played when the mechanical shutter or electronic 1st-curtain is set.
  12. Enhances the performance of “Movie Digital IS”. It stabilizes the image when taking selfies or walking shots using a wide-angle lens.
  13. Adds [Auto Power Off Temp.: Standard/High] to the menu for still shooting.
  14. Fixes an issue, which displays Error Code 70 on the camera, that may occur, in rare instances, when the [Disp. performance] setting is set to [Smooth].
  15. Fixes minor issues.

As an R5 stills shooter, there's nothing in this update that excites me, it's a snooze fest...lol!

As a video shooter, this is a great upgrade. I don’t need to use the ‘cheat’ approach to circumvent the overheating timer.

Sure would have been nice to get the "In camera depth compositing during focus bracketing” AND focus bracketing with a flash (!!) on the R5 update.

R6 owner here. If the IS wobble is fixed then this is huge.  Handheld panning shots at 16mm were just awful....

Re: This R3 update seems a direct response to OM-1's 120 FPS

Now if Canon can follow the path, by adding the "High Resolution mode" (Tripod) - Shoots 8 images with 1/2 pixel offsets to boost resolution to 96MP.
And a "Hand-held High Resolution“ mode - Shoots 12 shots using image stabilization. Gives up to 60MP resolution.
Don't forget LiveND. Then the R3 will be perfect!!!

Very strange the update it’s still not available on the Canon UK or EU sites, but is available on the USA site?

Does make me a bit nervous that there may be issues with it?

The R3 firmware v1.2 went up on the UK site late yesterday. R5 firmware v1.6 is still not up.

Yes, should have stated in my post that I have an R5.

I also see that the R6 1.6.0 firmware is not up either.

Re: R6, R5, R3 new firmware now available

Just updated my R3 to 1.2.0 and within 5 mins of just going through the menus ive got a completely locked up camera. In all my 30 years of using canon cameras ive never experienced this. Do they not test these firmware upgrades before releasing? Is it possible to go back to 1.1.1?

As you can see from the image even switching the camera off doesnt help. Unbelievable. Id strongly wait before upgrading to 1.2.0 until canon sort this out.

Mine seems to be working fine. Perhaps try a full reset and then configure it all again? A pain, but it’s probably a specific combination of your settings that’s causing it.

Did you follow the instructions to the letter? I didn’t completely (I didn’t set it to P mode).

I updated the firmware on my R3 yesterday and it works perfectly.  I am not experiencing the problems you're having.

Did you try turning the camera off and removing the battery for about 30 seconds?

I've just seen this in an email from Canon...

  • Adds the ability for in camera "Depth compositing" during "Focus bracketing."
This looks interesting - anyone know what it means?

It will generate a focus stacked image in-camera in JPG format.

They have a nack of skirting around a simple description and instead making up some ridiculously complicated crap which you have to decipher.

May heaven help you… I started a thread to that effect and got ROASTED ALIVE.

Get this: The gem of the update is that the camera will no longer shut down if it gets hot. It will just keep going and going… and apparently, it gets hot to the touch but works just fine that way.  So no more 8K video limit, no more shut down after keeping LiveView active too long. It’s a huge improvement, except… the “fix” was to remove a limitation that shouldn’t have been there in the first place.
