Need user info on Canon 200/2.8 EF (USM II) lens

Would like to adapt this lens to Nikon Z and was wondering if the "F-stop ring" (closest to camera) actually adjusts the F-stops or it's there just to mount the lens ?

There are several adapters on the market, so that's not an issue.  Thanks.

Don't know what you mean by "F-stop ring" but I don't see any aperture control.

Thanks for getting back.

Many lenses have the ring (indicated) to adjust the F-stops manually....tho I have no idea if this is the case with this particular lens (or not).  That's why I'm asking, since THAT would make a difference.  Or perhaps I have to get an adapter that can do this via the camera (electronically).

All Canon EF, EF-S, EF-M, and RF lenses have electronic connections to the camera to control AF and aperture. I think there are adapters that emulate this connection to mount EF lenses to Sony E-mount and Fuji X-mount. I don't think there are any adapters to adapt these Canon lenses to Nikon bodies.

Check my original post from the instruction manual and you'll see that that red arrow doesn't point to anything meaningful.

Basing on my prev knowledge the ring to the right clearly indicates aperture change.  Some lenses ( I happen to have one too) have the ring and no visual indicators.

The manual (pic you provided) for the Canon 200/2.8 does not clearly indicate the function for the ring (R. side).....and only people who used the lens would know it.  THIS was the reason I asked.  By the way just about all the legacy lenses (Nikon) have this sort of aperture adjusting ring.

OK, maybe I'm bit retro with all these manual optics, but the older Canon lenses were v. similar.

The lens you picture is not the lens you asked about.

True.  I showed you an example what the ring has been used for many years, in fact on Canon lenses as well.  Granted, perhaps not in the recent years.

this part serves nothing in particular. normally on EF lenses the part of tubus closest to the mount has some sort  of ribbing to give safer grip while screwing the lens in/out of the mount. see a little comparison for 200/2.8 and 135/2 below

Canon EF lenses never had aperture control rings. Their electronic apertures are controlled by camera controls.

Canon has added electronic aperture controls to RF lenses and to one of their EF to RF adapters.

It's just a grip to make it easier to mount the lens.  No Canon made EF or EF-s lens has ever had a mechanical aperture ring.

Commlite, Fringer Techart and Viltrox (possibly others) all make £200-ish electronic mount adapters to put EF lenses onto Nikon Z.  They have to be electronic and translate the protocols in order to adjust the aperture.  The plus side of this is that every EF lens made in the last 35 years should AF on Z mount, even though Nikon AF and AF-D lenses won't.

Concerned about AF on Nikon body through adapter.
1

The aperture issue has been addressed.

My concern is how good the AF will be converted to a Nikon body through an adapter. Generally speaking adapting AF lenses from other manufacturers is not ideal.

Since the Nikon 180/2.8 D ED will not work, the next cheapest lens you could consider is a used Nikon 80-200mm f2.8 AF-S.

Re: Adapter, but not AF related.

Thanks all for responding.  While we were asleep Canon (tech) answered my question.  True, the ring close to the camera is NOT adjustable as to aperture....that was my initial question.

Since I shoot manually I was under the impression that any elect. contacts were not needed and I could adjust the aperture just like I did in the film days - not so.  I'm aware that there are adapters with contacts.....and that itself becomes a problem for some, since the "appropriate" contacts did not work - all one has to do is read some of the reviews.  In short, I'm trying to eliminate those issues from day one (if possible).

As stated, AF did not enter this plateau, but having appropriate contacts (one can hope) will allow me to adjust the aperture.

Initially I thought of Nikkor 180/2.8.  This lens will fit, no doubt, by using FTZ adapter and it WILL WORK.  Having the aperture adjustment I can use optics even from 45yrs ago+ (50mm F1.4 AIS or the famous 105mm F2.5+++).  Granted (it's visual), I might be off by 1/2-1 F-stop, which can be tweaked in the edit.....till I get totally proficient.  Anyway, I needed a lens that fits with my new 24-120S.....and considering Nikon future plan, I can't see the manuf come up with anything close to that focal length.....nor I wished to go the 70-200 route.....so the Canon 200mm became a bit of an obsession.  Bit convoluted, but there you have it.  Again thanks.

Re: Adapter, but not AF related.

Yes, AI and AI-S lenses won't be a problem.  The 180/2.8 AF will not autofocus, and I am not sure if it can be manual focused.  A quick search will tell you.

The EF 200/2.8 L will autofocus,  but it may be worse in lowlight, or it may be too slow for sports.  This is due to different electronic circuitry between Canon and Nikon and how the adapter handles it.

No EF mount lenses have an aperture ring.  With EF lenses all the control is through the electronic contacts.

Re: Adapter, but not AF related.

I use the version I of this lens on my GFX100s. Works really good. I can control aperture manually through the Fringer Pro adapter or through my camera.
