EF-M or EF Wide Angle for M6 Mark II

So, I'm not from the US and lenses where I live are too expensive(I'm talking like one sigma lens costing 5 monthly wages) and I need a good, open wide angle lens for M6 Mark II, I was thinking on the Sigma 16mm 1.4 as everyone recomends it, but now knowing how the M system is basically dead and I already have a Speedbooster, should I consider getting a prime EF or EF-S lens? I know they're probably gonna be more expensive than the Sigma, but I could use them in the future since there are lots of EF adapters and not many EF-M adapters when I do get a new camera. Any recomendations? Are my points valid or am I just tripping? My biggest worry is not being able to sell a R$3000 lens because no one actually owns an EF-M camera.

Re: EF-M or EF Wide Angle for M6 Mark II

A couple of general comments on the speedbooster. In general, the wider and brighter a lens, the more likely it is to have optical problems on a speedbooster. Wide angle zooms tend to be especially bad on a speedbooster. The EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM might be OK on the speedbooster.  Second, you can only use a speedbooster with full frame EF lenses. Crop sensor EF-S lenses will show very heavy vignetting, and the extended rear element may prevent the EF-S lens from even mounting on the speedbooster.

Basically, using a speedbooster for your wide angle needs will likely end in disappointment.

I think it's up for debate whether EF-M lenses will lose value faster than EF/EF-S. As for your question, I'm a little confused because you originally said Sigma lenses are too expensive, but then you said you were considering a Sigma lens. How wide and bright are you looking for? Zoom or prime? Manual or autofocus? The EF-M 11-22 is basically the same price as the Sigma 16mm F1.4, at least here in the US. There's also the Rokinon 12mm F2, which is significantly cheaper, if you don't mind a manual focus prime.

Get the EF-M 11-22.

It's a real bargain.

Keep the M around even after you move on, just to use that lens.

I need a fast and autofocus lens, that's why I'm thinking about getting a non-EF-M lens, since all the fast and AF lens(EF-M or not) are really expensive, why would I get the EF-M? The 11-22mm seems great but it's not fast at all.

The Sigma 16mm f/1.4 is about the same price as the Canon 11-22mm and fast, but it's huge (the same size as the full-frame Sony 24-70mm f/4) and it doesn't zoom. It's said to be nearly as good as the reasonably sized Samyang 12mm f/2 at â…” the price. That Samyang doesn't zoom or AF, but it has a focussing scale and a huge depth of field.

The Canon 22mm f/2 is your cheapest AF option new, but 35mm FF equivalent isn't thought of as particularly wide these days. The Canon 11-22mm is slow, but it's just as good in low light as the 22mm f/2 if your subject isn't moving, because of its IS. What you lose in possibly stopping subject movement is more than made up for in having more of your subject in focus.

Can you explain a bit about how you intend to use your new lens such that the need for speed dominates all other factors?

EF-S 24 mm f/2.8 STM?

I need a good, open wide angle lens for M6 Mark II

You might consider the EF-S 24 mm f/2.8 STM on a plain adapter. I don’t know if that’s wide enough or fast enough for your needs.

New, the lens costs about R$1000, but you might be able to find one second-hand. The Canon EF-M to EF adapter is also about R$1000 new, but you can find the Viltrox plain adapter for about R$250 new.

One advantage of an EF or EF-S lens is that if you need or want to change to a new system, you can for the cost of an adapter (and possibly some AF performance). One disadvantage is that they tend to be larger. In this particular case, the EF-M 22 mm f/2 lens is also slightly wider and significantly faster.

Regards,

Alan

24mm f/2.8 IS USM is not that sharp in the corners wide open on full frame so likely the speedboosted APS-C edges also affected. Also strong vignetting. Does have IS though and nice stopped down.

Sigma 16mm is nice  and not bad at edges even wide open and less vignetting- suggest get a good 2nd hand copy from a dealer and that way still get a warranty and also avoid some of a potential future price drop if selling on.

Re: EF-S 24 mm f/2.8 STM?

Thanks everyone for the replies, I do own a gimbal and the 24mm 2.8, I just need a wide lens because I use it for music videos and a lot of night video too, I don't think I can run away from the the sigma 16mm

I use the sigma 16 all the time and like it very much, the M6 II and sig 16 is probably my favorite set up

The EF-M system is NOT dead, not by a long shot because nothing has replaced it.

Nothing replaced Samsung NX and I think we can all safely call that system dead.
