Replace my 15-45 kit lens?

Replace my 15-45 kit lens?

I own a Canon M6 Mk II.  I really like it.  Bought it for travel.

It went to London with me last week.  I changed lenses in Westminster Abbey and forgot to put my kit lens back into the bag.

Sigh....

It was not at lost and found.

I could buy another kit lens for a bargain at MPB.  But I wonder if I need it.

Here is what I now own:

EF-M lenses: 11-22, 28 macro, 32, 55-200

that kit zoom was useful...

but

I own an EF to M adapter from Viltrox and I paired it with my old 40 mm f/2.8 EF 'pancake' lens.  I just tried it out last night and got good photos with it.  But it's another prime... the two of em together are about the size of some EF-M lenses.  I will probably include this in my M series lens bag.

I never shoot vids.

I did not use the 15-45 a lot, but I used it.

Do I need to replace it?

only problem is that I now have nothing in the mid range for zooms....

and it is dirt cheap at MPB.

Reviews seem to favor the 15-45 over the older 18-55.  I am open to opinions about that lens.

Unless I am missing something, there are no other small, light mid range zooms available for that camera.

Advice? Opinions?

Thanks in advance

I was in a similar predicament to you .. kind of.

You see, I had an M50 and an M50 mkii bodies and several lenses and I recently had an offer to sell my M50 with 15-45 at a good price, which I did. Just like you, I started wondering if I need to replace the 15-45 as I already have EF-M 11-22, 55-200 and the 2 gorgeous Sigma 1.4s, the 30 and 56mm. My "decision" not to replace the 15-45 lasted less than 24 hours and I just bought one of the "as new" examples at MPB for €78 which is making it's way to Cyprus as we speak.

Yes the Sigmas are gorgeous lenses and for portraits, weddings etc they are worth their weight in gold but nothing can replace the convenience of the kit lens which is light and cheap and goes everywhere with me even strapped to a backpack when I mountain bike. I most certainly would not be using my Sigmas or the 11-22 mountain biking or as a "go-anywhere" lens. My recommendation is to replace it.

Thanks in advance

There's lots of variation in both the standard kit zooms, anywhere from pretty good to terrible, with most seemingly in the middle. Personally, the two copies I've had of the 18-55 are both sharper and more contrasty than my 15-45, especially on the long end, but still nothing special. I keep the 15-45 around because it goes to 15 and is decent there when stopped down. Another potential choice is the 18-150, which seems to be much better regarded overall then either off the other two, but it is more expensive and bigger.

I love the 18-150.  It is not a large lens and I can walk around without having to change lenses.

I would get 18-150 if you don't have it.

I'm an event photographer

event photographers can shoot primes instead of zooms when they have multiple bodies and not miss shots

instead of getting a zoom, just throw multiple bodies into the mix

Re: Replace my 15-45 kit lens?

Hi

I'd be slightly wary of 2nd hand 15-45s as you may find disproportionately the bad copies are the ones being sold on.

Might suggest even buying 3, testing and returning 2.

This lens, despite its bad press is simply the best general zoom for the M system - for general use.

- The 11-22 is great if you only need 35MM equiv FOV

- The 18-150 is good provided you dont need wider angle - the difference between 15mm and 18mm is substantial - I find really noticeable. You end up either missing shots or changing lenses.

- It is so small and light

- It is also very cheap as you say, so great for casual shooting

Hard to beat this lens when used at f/5.6 wide end and f/8 long end for general shooting - as long as a good (normal) copy.

+1 to this.

I would also definitely miss the 15-45 kit lens. It's so small and handy. Very versatile too, with great results if you get a good copy.

I also have the EF-M 18-55 and 18-150 lenses, and they too are very good performers.  I'd recommend either of them also.

As you have already 55-200mm, the 18-150mm makes only sense if you skip the tele in order to have only 1 zoom besides the 11-22.

If you want to save cost and, if you don't mind lens changes, then the 15-45mm may fit in better to your existing array.

Be warned though that the quality/consistency of the 15-45 is said to be quite a lottery...
