Youtube removed 5K resolution option? (2880s for 360° video)
1

I make VR videos using Insta360 cameras with native resolution 5760x2880s - 5K. For two years every video shows up with 2880s 5K option. But between 27 Jun (last good) and 2 July (first bad) 5K option seems removed. Have checked many other videos from other people and found only *one* uploaded in July that still gives 5K resolution option. Note, I'm searching videos that specifically mention 5K or 2880, since, owner clearly expects them to be 5K.

Is there **any** communication or notice from YT about any change relating to this? Moved to premium creator feature or other such thing?? Anyone know?

Thanks for noting this.  I also was wondering what happened, as I tried to upload some 5k videos myself.

I don't follow the day in and out of VP9 and all that jazz.  Figured it was my browsers, Chrome or Edge.

But I did see some other youtube vids in 5k and was wondering why I wasn't hitting that option.

Are the old videos still 5K? If so it's not removed.

YT can take awhile to make all resolutions available. They start I think with the lowest but depending on how busy their systems are it might take awhile. They also at times prioritize stuff. Years ago it was 4K. Maybe 8K now. They may have decided 5K can wait.

Old ones are not removed, but no new ones are going up - I have checked multiple users. Each resolution has to be processed into VP9 so each resolution they 'ignore' saves them time and I guess money.

Are they still using VP9? I thought they moved on to AV1

Oh, that I don't know.. could well be I guess. Just whatever I was aware of previously, could definitely be out of date.

i checked some recent YouTube videos.  I see some with AV1, and some still using VP9.

I haven't been posting VR, but I've posted four 5k (5120x2880 in my case) videos in the last week and they all appeared fine... e.g.

(Which is perhaps my worst ever camerawork on YT...)

I'm maxed out at 4k in Edge and in Chrome on my laptop. (MSI 17
 4k mini led/2080Super).

Perhaps there is a setting I'm missing.

I only see 4K as the max using Edge and Chrome Browsers.

Oh you're right, it's changed...

This one:

Is still 5k.

I did note it was taking ages to process them, maybe it stops at 4k if they are very busy?

I originally didn't entirely understand whether the OP was saying they could no longer upload 5k videos, the 5k version never appeared for new videos or all their 5k videos had disappeared, so I was pointing out I hadn't see old videos change so far.

"Uploaded in July" was the key statement.

I've since seen some of my previously-5K videos reduced to 2160p. But well nobody watches my channel so I guess it really doesn't matter in the end haha.

Note: In 2022, we started removing support for playback at resolutions between 4K and 8K. For example, we may no longer support playback at 5K.

I think that solves the mystery.

This might be the next move?

4k could go to premium.

I've heard the rumour but it seems a dumb move when even over the air TV is going 4K.

I liked this because it's very useful, and thanks for that, but I don't "like" it of course.

Considering the number of Action and 360 cameras that shoot in 5k it seems a bad move, especially when it comes to zooming in on 360 videos.
I wonder if the best answer is to downscale to 4k yourself to optimise the quality, to let them do it as they will process the video again anyway, or to upscale to 8k?

I think you get the best YouTube quality the higher the resolution of the file you upload. I upload my GoPro Hero 5.3K videos in 5K and the results look good on YouTube in 4K.
