Love the camera - hate the output

The X100T is what put me off adopting Fujifilm as a system - I love the camera and still use it but just cant get the colours right - Capture One does a very good demosaicing  job to the point of almost no worms and colour artifacts are visible but sadly, the X100T became a forever B&W camera.

I would like to have seen the colour versions because for most of these, I do not think B&W is doing them any favours.

I had the same reaction to the Canon M6II. Never could warm up to the color science, but it did some nice BW. I still wonder if I should have kept it for that reason.

#5 and 8 are my favorites.

Examples... in color?

Well... maybe it's just me, but I find it rather odd that you would complain about problems with the color, yet only show B&W examples for folks here to look at. Maybe some SOOC color examples that illustrate the issues you're seeing might help you get a bit more guidance. Most of the comments I've seen here are pretty positive with respect to Fujifilm colors, so I'd be very interested in seeing some of your examples that illustrate the issue.

Mainly because I like the form factor - the DR and high ISO are also very good and the res is far beyound my needs. I just "pretend" tis loaded with a B&W roll all the time

Mind, the pics posted were quick conversions using Capture One preset - you could generate richer B&W raf conversions were you to put thought/ time into it.

Appreciate the offer -

I am sure lots of photographers appreciate the x trans output staright OOC and not having to fiddle about in post and/ or "pre"-capture wrt custom/ WB calibration etc. Both Capture One and Iridient now translate excellent output.

Love and hate are personal preferences - nothing to do with complaining -

Well, it’s your call, of course.  But if you have issues with the colors, then at least providing one or two examples might help others better understand your concerns.  You went to the trouble of calling out the issue, yet have provided absolutely nothing that illustrates it.  I think this is important because Fuji’s colors are actually one of the things that many people single out as a major advantage of the system.   Your own concerns with examples might at least generate some discussion that could prove to be useful.  Without examples, it’s just another opinion on the internet.

I second Jerry.

How would you like to get tips or other opinions without sharing examples.

It could be a matter of post processing for example.

Martin

Re: Love the camera - hate the output

If you shoot RAW and set C1 in linear mode, you can pretty much apply any color corrections you want and save those into presets. Also you can obtain many LUTs, some for free.

For SOOC images there are many recipes available to fine tune white balance and other settings.

With the scarce info you have us, that is about all the tips we can give you.

well, it really shouldn't. For many the X100 series is in fact the gateway drug

Regarding colours, the X100T has the Xtrans II sensor and more importantly the EXR Processor II. It's the same configuration as in the X70, X-E2, X-E2s, X-100S, X-T10 and X-T1, all of these will give you the some default colours and processing as your X-100T.

If you don't like it why not try a later generation camera for example:

X-trans III with X-Processor Pro: X-T2, X-100F, X-T20, X-E3 etc
X-trans IV with X processor IV: X-T3, X-100V, X-T30, X-E4 etc

the colour output from these will be different from the second generation cameras like your X-100T.

I've tried all four generations and I personally prefer the first generation and the fourth in terms of colours out of camera. The default second generation colours I don't like very much, they are too contrasty for me and also the auto white balance is too cool for my taste. Maybe that is your issue with the colours (e.g. if you are used to the warm Canon colours)?

and if you like black and white, starting with X-trans III all cameras have the ACROS film simulation which many highly regard as giving one of the best out of camera black and white pictures (so another reason to try a later generation camera!)

It would have been a lot more useful both for him and others in the forum if he were able to show examples of the issues he's raised. As I said, earlier, it's just another opinion on the internet. If one shares an opinion here, but is unwilling to back it with something that demonstrates the issue, then it stands to reason that some people might question whether the opinion is valid. I'm not questioning his right to post this... only whether it adds any value either to the forum or to resolving his issue. I can't speak for others, but from my standpoint, posts that highlight issues but offer no corroboration or examples are, IMHO, pretty well ignorable.

NICE SHOTS…especially the 2 cemetery shots. Did you take comparable shots with the M,4/3 gear? How does the B/W render. I see posts like yours and others that use every software under the sun to try and do better but to me its is sometimes just the hassle. I love the in camera output of BW especially Acros on the new cameras. On the xpro It has in camera TIFF output with the editor and I have used that a few times as well.

Hey thanks didn't mean for this to be a fully blown out tec debate but appreciate the input nonetheless.

No a friend of mine actually lent me a X100IV for a test drive once - wonderful kit but same impression. Strangely, the older I get the more I'd rather let the machine do the work (Film?) rather than coping with the uncertainty of my decisions - I am relying on quality JPEGs more and more and that's why I choose another system as my main.

The X100T became a dedicated raf  > B&W kit. For the form factor and a colour output I "love"  I still keep 2 1st gen x100esses.

My very personal wishlist:

- Put a "normal" sensor inside please!

- Stop betting on the moire thing and faux film simulations - the build quality, ergonomics and lens lineup is good enough to persuade wannabe adopters.

Hey thanks - the X100T has somehow better tonality in B&W than MFT for straight forward processing - more subtle transients. I do not use fujifilm own profiles for this - I used to convert in iridient > ACR BW3. But nowadays I use Capture 1 express Fujifilm base B&W profile with minimum contrast and curve adjustments if needed.

Fair enough… but I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for it.  Some of the areas you have issues with are actually seen as advantageous by others.  Different strokes……

I use Capture One for the X100F.  When I had the X100T I used SilkyPix which I found rendered the images better. Give it a try.

I would like to know what he does not like. Is the white balance off, are the color profiles not to his liking, are the contrast levels the problem.
Why else make a forum post about this topic? If no advice is requested, then just better sell the camera and get something else.

Have you tried the white balance tweak adjustment in the camera?

You can also do white balance bracketing in-camera.  It might help, I don't know.
