CANON REBEL T3 1100D "RELEASE SHUTTER W/O LENS

Hello,

I searched all the menus including the fn but could not find this setting. Is there another way to enable this setting so I can use a manual lens? I posted this question earlier but I'm not sure I posted correctly so I apologize if it is repeated.

Thanks!

Joe,

Your Canon T3 uses an EF/EF-S mount. If the lens you want to use does not have the same mounting system, you will need an adapter. Find out what kind of mounting system your lens uses.

A company called Fotodiox makes a wide variety of adapters.

I don't know if you will find a menu setting for "release shutter without a lens" in your shooting menu. My T8i doesn't seem to have one, but I used to shoot with a manual lens on my T6 all the time.

PS: Because your camera doesn't know that a lens is attached, you will have to set the aperture manually on your lens and your readout will always show 0 for aperture on the display.

I can't remember how to do it, but I'm pretty sure it's possible.

at least it was on my 1200d, but as I said I can't remember how (it was 2 cameras ago).

It is not possible to do this in Auto (green square) mode but will work in M or AV modes without the need to change anything in the menu.

Steve,

Thank you for the reply. Ishould have mentioned I am using SVBONY adapter on which I have attached a CA1 Extension Tube M42 Thread T Adapter and inside this tube I have placed an eyepiece .this complete setup is attached to my camera and then slid onto my Bushnell relector telescope so I can take shots of the stars.

I was researching too and I found the adapter you mentioned. The difference is that that adapter had the gold electronic conductors (7 dots) that mine does not. Its a bit pricey and I wanted to be sure before ordering whether this new adapter will actually solve the problem.

Thanks again,

Joe

Re: CANON REBEL T3 1100D "RELEASE SHUTTER W/O LENS

Jethro,

Thank you for replying. I checked a few other manuals. Every other manual I checked seemed to have this setting in the Fn (other) menu- just not my model. I downloaded a pdf version of my model and did a complete scan for "release" just to be sure and the only thing I could find was " release shutter without card " i wonder why they make it this hard. Then I found an app called "lantern" that runs a firmware alongside Canon's firmware that adds features Canon has missed. But its risky as they warn the camera could fail to boot and they take no responsibility for that. They do not explicitly state that this particular function is included.

I wrote to Canon on Friday night lets see if they respond.

Thank you,

Joe

Ray, thank you for the reply. I did set the camera to M in the menu but it won't release the shutter without the Canon lens. Am I missing something?

I'll try anything you can suggest.

Thank you

Joe

Steve,

I found this link to a video. At 2:03 minutes, the host clearly states my issue:

https://youtu.be/yfPe6BtGB2U

The problem is that the  solution he provides just does not exist on the Canon Rebel T3 1100 d.

I cannot believe that Canon would not have included this some way or at least a work around.

you mentioned on your T8i you did not have the setting to enable shutter release w/o lens. How did you work around it?

Thank you,

Joe

I think you mean Magic Lantern.

Magic Lantern adds a whole host of things to cameras like yours, and I'd be very surprised if it didn't included "release shutter without lens".

I installed it successfully on my canon 1200d, but, as you mentioned, there is a risk. It's up to you to decide if it's worth it.

Joe.

I haven't tried it, and I must admit, your needs are beyond my poor ability to help.

PS: Just for the heck of it, I took the lens off my camera, turned it on, and snapped a picture. The shutter worked fine. I got a perfectly blank picture of course, but the shutter worked fine.

Hello All!

To the folks who replied, Thank you very much for replying to my post.

I had a long chat with a very helpful Canon representative yesterday.

He confirmed first if all:

All Canon DSLRs have "release shutter without lens" functionality and if it is not a menu item then it works automatically.

He then had me Clear all setting effectively resetting my camera

He then had me switch the camera to all modes before the green box which is full auto and voila!! I could see through my telescope. Of course I had to use the T mount, inseet the telescope eyepiece in the extension tube, mount the setup on my telescope and I could see clearly.

I had a blast watching the moon and jupiter and its four moons dance around the moon all night.

Its amazing how is a span of a few hours the four moons around jupiter travel around jupiter and how our moon carries jupiter as it travels. Just so beautiful!

I called Canon this morning to send a special thanks to this gentleman. Following are the lknks he sent me during our call:

I was so impressed with the support I received.

We have a resolution thank you for permitting me to ask my question and to Steve, Jethro and Ray for helping.

I'm going to stick around this wonderful site and learn something.

Re: Magic Lantern

Hi Jethro,

Yes it is Magic Lantern. For now I'm going to stay with Cacon firmware, I want to avoid adding variables so I do not get so lost there is no point of return.

Thanks for your help

Yeah, it's probably best, unless you actually need any of the features ML gets you.

Thanks for your help
Joe
