Adapted lenses - Post your PHOTOS! - Part 5

The Part 4 thread is just about full, so I hope no one minds me starting Part 5.

Lunchtime Birds
6

Just some birds from my lunchtime stroll at work, nothing special. There's some motion blur in the image of the Vermillion Flycatcher cleaning its beak, because I had the camera at 1/250 for perched birds, but I like the moment nevertheless.

All with the M50 Mark II, Canon EF to EF-M adaptor, Kenko TELEPLUS-HD 1.4× DGX extender, and Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM. Quickly processed in Lightroom and Topaz DenoiseAI.

Regards,

Alan

House Sparrow. 350 mm cropped to 515 mm, f/8, 1/250 second, and ISO 1000.

Vermillion Flycatcher (female). 350 mm cropped to 540 mm, f/8, 1/250 second, and ISO 1000.

Vermillion Flycatcher (female). 350 mm cropped to 570 mm, f/8, 1/250 second, and ISO 1000.

House Finch. 350 mm cropped to 830 mm, f/8, 1/250 second, ISO 1000.

House Sparrow, apparently juvenile. 350 mm cropped to 570 mm, f/8, 1/500 second, and ISO 5000.

I'm impressed with those results with the 1.4x teleconverter. They still seem pretty sharp. Maybe lacking a bit of contrast, but that could be because of the lighting or processing. Here are a couple of mine with the same lens but no teleconverter.

Thanks. I agree that more contrast would strengthen them. The light was coming and going. It wasn’t too bad for the House Finch, but for the others was a little too uniform.

I do like both of these. I especially like your use of the background. In the first, it is matched perfectly to the subject; dark to contrast with the spider web and light to contrast with the branch. In the second, it follows the line of the branch.

Alan

EF-S 55-250 IS STM + Kenko 1.5x SHQ teleconverter
10

Rare catch: CSX engine #1. Canon M6ii, EF-S 55-250 IS STM, Kenko 1.5x SHQ TC, 375mm, f8, 1/1600s, ISO 160, cropped to pixel resolution but not downsampled (Atmospheric distortion from the afternoon heat)

Sandpiper. Canon M6ii, EF-S 55-250 IS STM, Kenko 1.5x SHQ TC, 375mm, f8, 1/1600s, ISO 640, cropped to pixel resolution but not downsampled

Anclote Key light from 2 miles away in infrared. Full-spectrum converted Canon M200, EF-S 55-250 IS STM, Kenko 1.5x SHQ TC, Hoya R72 IR filter, 375mm, f8, 1/400s, ISO 1000

Yellow-crowned Night Heron at sunset. Canon M6ii, EF-S 55-250 IS STM, Kenko 1.5x SHQ TC, 375mm, f8, 1/125s, ISO 1600

Klosterman Bayou Island. Canon M6ii, EF-S 55-250 IS STM, Kenko 1.5x SHQ TC, 150mm, f6.3, 1/1250s, ISO 100

Anclote Key light from 3.5 miles away. Canon M6ii, EF-S 55-250 IS STM, Kenko 1.5x SHQ TC, 375mm, f8, 1/1000s, ISO 500

The EF-S 55-250 IS STM's rear mount was modified (cut off) so it would work with EF teleconverters. The Kenko 1.5x SHQ teleconverter's chip was removed so that it would work fully. it does not report in EXIF data but caption data was provided.

The EF-M 55-200 IS STM is slightly sharper and more contrasty than this combo, but just doesn't have the same reach so it doesn't get as much use.

Nesting Berylline Hummingbird
1

A female Berylline Hummingbird (Saucerottia beryllina) has decided, perhaps unwisely, to nest right over the walkway between the main entrance of the building in which I work and the parking lot. Her nest is about four meters above ground level, so only a couple of meters above head level.

To avoid disturbing her more than I would do in my normal business, I only stop for a few seconds as I enter or leave the main entrance. Sometimes I just observe. Other times I take a few quick photos. She's been incubating for about a week now.

Regards,

Alan

Cool!

I notice you, like others, are using the ef-s 55-250mm IS STM with a teleconverter. That combo seems pretty popular. Does it provide good IQ?

Portraits

I have commented that one of the reasons I switched to a Canon M50 Mark II body was to get better Eye-AF. Today, I put that to the test, and was very happy with the results. I was able to use my EF 50 mm f/1.8 STM at f/1.8 without worrying about focus, and could pay more attention to composition and other factors. I’m sure better photographers than I could do this with manual focus, but I’m learning to work within my limitations.

I also learned that one advantage of living in Mexico is the wide range of backgrounds available for portraits.

That, and that there are few things as gratifying as your daughter seeing her portrait on the monitor of your camera and immediately instructing you to send it to her phone.

Regards,

Alan

You’re supposed to photograph birds with the Sun on your back and you’re supposed to fill the frame, but I’m happy with this back-lit environmental portrait.

More Portraits

I had some friends over for lunch at the weekend, and took their portraits in my backyard. The lighting was nothing fancy — a 33-inch shoot-through translucent umbrella above them and to their right and a Godox TT350 flash at about 1/16 power controlled by a Godox XPro — but I like the results. Pre-lunch martinis did help them pose in a more relaxed manner.

All taken with Canon M50 Mark II with Canon EF-M adapter and Canon EF-S 18-135 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM at 50 to 72 mm, f/5 to f/5.6, 1/200 second, and ISO 100.

Nice. I especially like the compositions in the first and second, and the sense of being transported into the scenes.

The last one is a good use of a slowish telephoto for macro work, giving good depth of field on the subject but still managing to give a blurred background.

I just noticed I have a tiny bit of another orange flower peaking in from the top. I should've cropped that. Whoops. Thanks for the kind words!
