First shots and video, Tamron 17-70 and Viltrox 13mm
5

I was finally able to get out and try these new lenses early yesterday morning. I had the Viltrox on an X-T3, shooting intervals for a morning sunrise timelapse, then I shot some stills and videos with it on the X-S10. While the 13mm + X-T3 were shooting intervals, I was shooting stills and videos with the Tamron 17-70 on the X-S10. I was trying to get an idea of how the lens was working (or not) with IBIS, and also to see the optical behaviour of the lens in low light. I did post two videos on YT, though they are not review videos, and I am not a videographer, so keep those caveats in mind if you watch them. Again, this was my first use of them out in the field, so my observations aren't based on comprehensive testing.

Some of my initial thoughts:

Tamron 17-70mm: Definitely lighter and less bulky than the 16-55,  was easy to handle on the X-S10. Lack of aperture ring didn't bother me, though a couple of times I turned the focus ring as if it was the aperture ring Mixed feelings on the IBIS/VC. Seemed very good when the camera was static, was able to get decent sharpness at 1/4 and 1/3-sec  shutter speeds handheld. In the camera menus IBIS/OIS was enabled, though it's hard to tell if they're working well together. Happy with the IQ for the focal range, though the lighting and subject matter were limited (I had to get home to the kids so I couldn't stay longer). Has some flare issues but I will have to try it more under different lighting conditions. No significant issues with CA that I could see, seems well-corrected. Seemed to render on the warm side.

Viltrox 13mm: Sharp and great close focusing. Easy to handle, quality construction. Flares and other significant artifacts when pointed at the sun. I'll try it for astro but it was also going to be my wide landscape lens. I may return it as the flare situation wasn't good, at least on my first try with it. In video mode on the X-S10 there were a few wobbles, and some jittery movement when panning. No significant CA that I could see. Seemed to render on the cool side.

All pics below are sooc jpegs with no editing, shot in Provia and possibly Classic Neg (can't quite remember). Metadata is included.

@ f16 to show the worst of the flare patterns, but they show up at wider apertures unfortunately

Thanks for the input

I would love to see some comparisons between the 16-55 and the tamron

The viltrox does suffer of flare, but of ghosting (the sun pattern) I have a 10-24 and it flare a lot more than this one.

I realy hope to see some direct comparison of xf16-55 and tamron 17-70 regarding flare resistance and behave against pure sun in general.

It would be so helpfull!

Powerdoc, just on the side note, would you write something about your experience with viltrox 13 and xf10-24? I was going to buy the zoom hoping it was superior to viltrox in terms of flare.

I also got the tamron recentlty and will be testing it out over the next few weeks on an x pro 3. I dont have the 16-55 to compare to anymore but it is slightly lighter and less bulky because of the 67mm filter thread. It is however longer. Initial impressions are positive but I may wait for the sigma 18-50 instead given my other existing lenses.

The VC is decent and AF fairly accurate. Found the lens missed AF a bit in low light though.

Still wish the focus ring could be configured as an aperture ring, even if unmarked.

Kind of miss the metal construction of fuji lenses as they pair with fuji bodies.

Havent processed any images yet but initial samples on the LCD look solid.

Low-res images....

I realized late last night that the images I posted were reduced in size; there is a glitch with my ON1 export presets that I hope will be resolved soon. I apologize for them not being in their full jpeg glory
