Red light flashing near card; cannot take any pictures; memory may be full

I have a Rebel T4i.  I am wondering what is causing the red light to flash near the photo card.  It could be that the card has reached its full capacity.  But I don't know how many photos that is.  I have a lot of photos in hi def.  The total on the card is over 5k.  Can someone please tell me approximately how many photos the card typically can handle and what the camera does when it finally reaches capacity?  I am trying to erase many photos, but it still is not working.  Thank you.

If you suspect the card is getting full, time to "off-load" some of the pics on it to either your internal drive or an external drive on which you keep photos.

I'd try to clear out 1/3 to 1/2 of the available space...

Keeping photos on your memory card is not a good idea, it only takes one file to get corrupted and you can lose the lot. It is far better to move photos to your computer on a regular basis then reformat the card in camera for a fresh start.

Erasing individual photos in camera is also not a good idea because it wastes a lot of the memory on the card and results in a jumbled and non contiguous file storage.

Tulipe,

The light near your card usually indicates that information is being written to, or being read from your card, or the card is being formatted.

Have you tried inserting a different card?

Itt's possible your card is either full, or has been damaged or corrupted. What size is your carrd? Is it a 16GB? 32GB? 64GB?

If it's a 32GB, it's quite possible that it's full if you have 5,000 pictures stored on it.
