question about an old e-p5 I just bought

It all seems to work fine. But. While shooting, sometimes the lcd switches to what is a 10x mode (this is marked in the lower left hand corner in red), an image blown up appears, very grainy, seems like it is trying to focus peak? And there are four arrows to the sides and top and bottom in red. It lasts a few moments, then the lcd goes back to normal.

I've been going through the manual. I can't find what it is. Maybe the owner before me set something up that I can't find.

It happens just while scanning around looking for a next shot. I don't press any buttons or move any dials. Seems automatic.

Can someone please tell me what this is? Does the camera just scan this way? Is there a way to turn it off. It isn't helping me with anything.

I think the image stabilization comes on too. I hear that whirring sound.

ok. thanks for help.

ps on this new to me body...It's heavier than I thought it would be. It feels solid and good. All the buttons and dials work as advertised. Been playing with a few fixed focal length lenses. Very nice image quality. At first it seemed slow, but I set up all the options to suit what I like, and updated firmware to 1.8 and it seems much better. Maybe I'm just getting used to it?

mf assist settings?

Possibly caused by your mf assist settings (Cog menue A). You can set up focus peaking and magnify to automatically engage when you focus manually. Could be that you accidently touch the focus ring of the lens and activate the mf assist function.

Not sure about this but could be the zoom frame Af mode set up where it zoom in on your subject either 5,7,10,or 14 times to aid in focusing on a particular part of your subject. think it activates as soon as you try to focus.

Think its activated by pressing a button on the back " small circle with a line on it."

Someone may have activated it in the menu but not to sure how it can be deactivated if at all. Checked in the manual online and got this from page 42 i think

Anyway not sure if this helps at all but might be worth checking.

Good luck

My thoughts too. Although uncertain why this pops up as OP says he don't push any buttons and doesn't mention using MF.

Don't know the menu, but as this is a used model might be a good idea to reset to factory settings and setup to your own taste.

Set AF to AF S only, you have set to AF S + Manual focus probably.

This seems to have worked. Thanks yonsito. My af setting was s-af + mf. Changed to only s-af. I tried twice and couldn't duplicate the problem. I will give it another go tomorrow.

Like i wrote. Didn't hit any buttons or dials. Just turning the camera on it sometimes happened. Or after a shot, scanning subjects, bam, it went into that mode and popped back out on its own.

I did look at this in the manual. I couldn't get it to change the behavior i was seeing. It did seem tied to the size of the green focus box. I need to go back and check it out.

Some info

I made a page about the E-P5 menus that may explain some items a little clearer than the manual http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~parsog/olyepl1/56-ep5-custom-menus.html

Happens to me quite often when I hold the camera and somehow touch the focus ring on the lens itself. Common occurence with some of the smaller bodies and lenses. Enjoy your camera!

Glad to help. I'm still using my pair of E-P5 but only very little lately due to no travel. No camera later than the E-P5 appeals to me at all, so I stick with it.

In my case I assigned the 4 MySets to the dial and relabelled it. MySets 1,2,3 are A mode set up for varying light conditions and 4 is usually M mode for the rare times I use flash.

For a more useful charger I use a USB powered one that charges the OEM or clones OK to the normal 8.4V, it suits me better when travelling to have everything USB chargeable. The OEM charger combined with the OEM battery charges to something like 8.6V and may give a few more shots per charge but needs a wall socket to power it.

Yep, touching the focus ring of the lens is all that is needed to magnify the image. I sometimes do this by accident, but as long as it is quick and intuitive to exit the mode, this is not an issue. On Panasonics, exiting the magnification happens by half-pressing the shutter release button. On most modern cameras, it's the same button one presses to exit menus or playback and start shooting pictures, making it very intuitive.

On older Olympus-cameras (IIRC, E-PM1, E-P1), a separate button had to be pressed to exit magnification, making it quite clumsy to use. I believe Olympus has significantly improved the usability of their cameras since, perhaps this is not an issue with E-P5?

ok, those changed dial options to include mysets 1-4 is very cool...did you print those out on metal? plastic? paper and glue on top of existing dial or replace the original...no really, that's a great idea, i never use the ones you replaced either...

Inspired by Mod Martin Ocando I made the new tops with a Brother tape printer PT-700 that can print up to 24mm wide plastic tape.
