Buying advises: second camera

Hi everyone,
I am currently thinking about buying an old X-Trans II camera (X-T1, X-T10 or X-E2) and I would some advice to determine which of these bodies would better pair with an XF27 lens.
For a bit of context: I am the current happy owner of an X-T30 involved in medieval reenactment. It is a pleasure to bring my X-T30 to take pictures of our medieval adventures, but I am always a bit in fear of having my camera either damaged by bad weather or stolen.

Thus I would like to buy a used (and cheaper) X-Trans II body coupled with a Fujinon XF27mm Mk II lens (as primary lens) to serve as a "beater" travel camera for those more riskier activities.

I previously bought a X70 for that purpose, but the different battery (compared to the X-T30) is an inconvenience for me and (from what little practical experience I have) I seem to favor longer focal length than the 18mm of the X70.

An older X100 (X100S or X100T) could have been a solution, but I think that I would like to keep the ability to change lens (and perhaps play with the apparent rendering differences between the X-Trans II and X-Trans IV sensors).

I guess that an X-T1 would be rugged enough for that purpose, but would it be a good pairing with an XF27 since it is an heavier and bigger body than either the X-T10 or the X-E2 ?
Thanks in advance for your help !

The X-T1 works great with the 27, no worries there. I used to use the 27 WR with the X-T2 and never felt the pairing was mismatched in any way.

I'd say an X-T1 paired with an XF27 would a fine setup.  I am not sure why you'd go with the XF27mm Mkii and use it as a "beater". Your lens will be worth more than the camera even.  Try and find some second-hand mk1 lenses to go with your beater camera. I still have the 27mm mk1 lens and its perfectly fine.

I agree with the plan to contrast your cameras by owning two different sensors. I do the same thing, often choosing my X-T1 for a shoot because of its different image characteristics. I am fond of the X-Trans II sensor, especially in good light.

The only problem is, this setup may become precious to you; its that good. Then you'll have to go out and buy another "beater" that you're less protective of.

I am using an X-T10 with the 27mm WR right now, and I am 100% pleased with the combination. This camera was my original Fuji, and frankly I wasn't using it much after I bought my X-T2 in 2020. But I kept it because I hoped there would be a 27mm with an aperture ring, and I had a feeling that together they would make the modern equivalent of the Pentax MX compact mechanical SLR with the 40mm f/2 M lens, which was a truly great walkaround camera.  And so they do.

If you prefer a corner viewfinder, then try an X- E instead.

Thanks for your practical feedback ! I went with the X-T1 in the end !

Regarding the choice of lens version, I went with the Mk II for two reasons: the aperture ring (which I like very much, its physicality pushes me to pay more attention to it and to use it more) and the weather-sealing.

While the weather-sealing isn't an invincible protection against the weather, I guess it can't hurt to have it in situations where the bad weather is more of factor (like camping with medieval tents). It is true that the Mk II is pricier than the Mk I or the X-T1, but it will always be cheaper than my XF23mm F1.4 Mk I or my XF35mm F1.4 (both of which were bought new).

Perhaps "beater" was a poor choice of words - as I intend very much to take good care of my secondary camera as I do for the primary one - but I least I know that I am not risking all my gear when I will be using the X-T1 in those more adventurous conditions.
And, in fact, it is likely the last Fujinon lens that I buy new ! This secondary camera with an XF27mm lens was time-sensitive - because I wanted to have it for an incoming travel abroad - but otherwise I would have bought the lens used.

(My experience with the X70 has taught me that you can buy used sensitive gear, as long you have a good source !)

I considered the X-T10, especially as I am familiar with its ergonomics as a X-T30 user.

Then I figured that it was perhaps more interesting for me to have a camera with a different form-factor and I went with the X-T1. The weather-sealing will be a plus and I guess that it might be useful one day to have a body better suited for longer and heavier lenses ! (I don't think I would use lenses heavier than the XF23mm Mk I on the X-T30, as it becomes already rather front-heavy with it.)

The  X-T1 (435g), is a surprisingly lightweight camera  and only weighs about 55g more than the X-T30 (380g). It’s one of the reasons why it has such a large fanbase. The X-T* line has gained weight over the years.

But I find the X-T1 a much better ergonomic design than the X-T30, so heavier lenses shouldn’t be a problem.

Have you found your X-T1 yet? I hope you enjoy it when you start using it. It’s a great camera, especially at some of the bargain prices you can get it for these days.

Re: Buying advises: second camera

I always enjoy spending other people’s money.

You mention wanting to purchasing a cheaper camera but not that cost is the major factor in your purchase. I have an XT30 and love it. very powerful bit of gear in a small package. Two things I don’t like. No IBIS. Other than an OIS lens there isn’t anything for it. The body is a little too small for me. Put an L bracket and problem resolved.

The easiest solution for buying a 2nd body, if you can afford it, is the same body you already use and love. You know how to use it already. Set it up the same way as the 1st body and Bob is your uncle.

Don’t like that? Try an XE3. Small and lite. Midway between an X100 and XPRO2. Same sensor and engine. Amongst the 1st Fuji swipe screens. No IBIS or weather sealing. Don’t know how good the blue tooth is. I think this body should be in the running for your next body.

Re: Buying advises: second camera

If X-T1 is larger than you want, get the X-T10 if you want an old version of your current camera, or the X-E2 if you wold like something more pocketable because it doesn't have the Eve sticking up. You can point the flash up on the X-E2.

Bear in mind that if you are a high-iso JPG shooter, I would avoid xtrans2 due to waxy skin tones that can't be turned off. If you shoot Raw then no problems at all.

Is there really much of a used price difference between the X-T10 and X-T20?

Consider getting one of them with the XC16-50 zoom which is actually pretty great.

Re: Buying advises: second camera

Get a unit with Classic Chrome film simulation, and Also Acros if you like to shoot in B&W, the reason: you have more film possibilities with these two film simulations. Also, your images will look a lot more "modern".

I suggest getting a camera unit with X-Trans III, not II. Where I live 2nd hand units of X-T20 or even X-E3 are priced very competitively.
