In awe of XT4's IBIS
9

So finally I got myself a lightly used XT4 as an upgrade from my trusty XT3. My main reason was to see how much IBIS can lighten my load (specifically, not carrying a tripod).

Some of my (handheld) results were summarized here:

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4649065?page=2

16-55mm @ 55mm, 1/8

70-300mm @300mm, 1/25

I just came back from a week in Europe and as always, took a tripod in my suitcase. I have to say that after a week of shooting, I never used that tripod once!

Some examples here that would've warranted a tripod before (exif should be accurate):

High ISO, but usable

I guess next time I'll just leave the tripod home. This a lifetime habit that needs to change...(unless I'll shoot waterfalls, or some other landscape that really needs exposure > 1/8s).

Happy 4th!

Yes ibis is great to have as it explores all different kinds of creativity. What is the minimum shutter speed you can reach handheld with the XT4 and one of the 35mm lenses? Is 1” reachable?

I have an X-S10 and I've been thoroughly impressed with the IBIS as well - and the X-T4 is supposed to be even better. I've managed 1/25 @ 300mm handheld and as high as 1/4 @ 60mm and still come away with sharp images. I even got a 1/3 @ 80mm that was so close. For casual photography IBIS really does make a tripod almost unnecessary.

I don't have the 35mm prime but with the 16-55 I can go about 3-4 stops, but not slower than 1/8s (maybe pushing, 1/4). Before IBIS, at 35mm I would've stopped at ~1/50, so, maybe 1/10? And if super careful and bracing, 1/4?

You would need to use a stabilized lens with the IBIS to hit the really slow shutters like 1”.  You would never do it with IBIS alone.

the reason I am asking is to see whether I would be able to get these kind of shots with an XT4 and fast prime. 1" is feasible (not always) with the small EP7 and the 17 or 25mm/1.8 and can let me create beautiful light trails or movement effects.

Good on ya mate! I will always bring one. You never know. And, a tripod can do one thing IBIS can’t, put me in the picture.

Honestly, I’ve never been able to get it that low, but I don’t have any stabilized lenses either, just primes.

I believe you might be able to if you combine OIS with IBIS.

Yannis,

I actually tried this type of shot with the 16-55mm and couldn't get lower than 1/4s. Maybe I can try this with the 18-55 since it has OIS and see how low I can go..

There are just so many shots that you can take with the IBIS without even thinking about the shutter speed. It really removes alot of the worry.
